This sentence, you could have said it, I could have said it too. It belongs to the President of the European Commission, the Luxembourger Jean-Claude JUNCKER, in his State of the Union speech in 2015.

« Change is now »

Who doesn’t remember this slogan from François Hollande’s presidential campaign…

But concretely, how do we go about changing? How do we do things differently? How do we do better (should I add without money…)? What answers should we provide? How to transform without disrupting? Aren’t these few small questions indirect ways of asking how we, as public agents, can also drive change and innovate in our ecosystem which, at first glance, is not a reference in the field of creativity?

My name is Pauline, I am not a geek but I innovate anyway. I represent the interests of a French Region larger than Ireland and twice the size of Belgium to the European institutions. I won’t talk to you about technological innovation, that’s not my job (even if I take a close interest in it). I won’t talk to you about innovation in politics (I was asked not to even though I’m dying to). I will talk to you about what I understand by the word « innovation » and how in my job, I try every day to stay « connected » and to invent new ways of doing things.

Innovation is not just for « geeks ». Innovation does not only revolve around the private sector, technology, and products. Innovation also revolves around Humans and the successful combination of talents! The desire to innovate, or let’s say « to change things », is something you have within you. It’s a behavior, a state of mind, a posture, a sense of the collective that we can also drive every day in our daily lives even when we belong to a large « rusty » administrative machine that many citizens have stopped supporting (I dare to say it…). A machine that nevertheless aspires to only one thing: to renew itself, breathe, function, and produce innovation! In your administrations here and elsewhere, contrary to popular belief, there are many innovative agents, entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, disruptors, and troublemakers. These agents are called annoying developers or, better yet, « innovation managers ».

So here it is, if you are all alone in your administration and you recognized yourself in these few lines, I have a message for you and your long-term survival: DARE & BET

– Bet on information exchange (it is no longer the one who holds the information who has the power… it is the one who shares it)
– Bet on alliances #oneforallallforone and value the work of others.
– Dare to combine talents and dare to surround yourself with the skills you lack
– Dare to step out of your comfort zone to go towards open ecosystems that go beyond the public sphere

In summary, try, re-try, re-re-try, bypass and innovate anyway![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
