Mobileye Global Inc. is an automotive technology company headquartered in Jerusalem, Israel. It designs systems capable of interpreting the road environment using cameras and, depending on the architecture, other sensors. Its solutions combine semiconductors, perception software, mapping and driving functions. With an online presence at mobileye.com, the company primarily serves automakers and their suppliers, rather than motorists directly. It thus operates within the technology chain that connects obstacle detection to the vehicle’s response.

From computer vision research to the stock market

Mobileye was founded in 1999 by Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram. Its development builds on Shashua’s work in computer vision, with the aim of enabling a vehicle to understand its surroundings through image analysis. The company initially established itself in driver assistance, particularly in the detection of vehicles, pedestrians and road markings.

Following an initial public offering in 2014, Mobileye was acquired by Intel in 2017. It returned to Nasdaq in 2022 under the name Mobileye Global Inc., with Intel retaining a majority stake at that time. This trajectory illustrates the convergence of the semiconductor and automotive industries, where onboard data processing plays an increasingly important role.

From onboard chips to driving systems

The EyeQ processor family is one of the foundations of its business. These components perform the processing required by advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS. Combined with Mobileye’s software, they support functions such as lane departure warnings, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. The available features, however, depend on the integration chosen by each automaker.

Mobileye also develops REM, short for Road Experience Management, a mapping technology fed by data collected from equipped vehicles. Its portfolio includes SuperVision, a system that enables hands-free driving under certain conditions but requires the driver to remain attentive. The Chauffeur and Drive programs target higher levels of automation, respectively for passenger vehicles and autonomous applications such as robotaxis. These offerings should not be confused with unrestricted autonomy available on all roads.

What comes next?

Mobileye’s trajectory will depend on its ability to turn its developments into automotive programs produced at scale. Validation timelines, regulatory requirements and automakers’ economic trade-offs remain decisive factors. The company must also contend with specialized competitors and solutions developed in-house by certain automotive groups. Its challenge is twofold: to maintain its position in driver assistance systems already on the market and to demonstrate both the safety and economic viability of more autonomous systems within precisely defined operating domains.
