DataDirect Networks, Inc. is an American company specializing in high-performance data storage and management. Based in Chatsworth, California, it serves research centers, industrial companies and organizations that operate high-performance computing infrastructure. Its role is to make data accessible to compute servers with enough throughput to minimize waiting times. This function is particularly important in artificial intelligence architectures, where expensive accelerators need a continuous supply of data.

A history rooted in high-performance computing

Founded in 1998, DDN grew around the storage needs of technical and scientific environments. Its co-founders, Alex Bouzari and Paul Bloch, built its positioning around systems capable of handling demanding workloads, rather than general-purpose IT storage alone. Numerical simulations, scientific analysis and content production have provided markets for its technologies.

The group has also expanded its scope through acquisitions. In 2018, it took over the assets of Tintri, a specialist in storage for virtualized environments. In 2019, it acquired the IntelliFlash business from Western Digital. These transactions complemented its portfolio and extended its presence in enterprise infrastructure beyond its traditional base in high-performance computing.

Infrastructure for moving and using data

DDN’s offering combines storage systems, software and support services. Its EXAScaler range is based on the Lustre parallel file system, which is widely used in scientific computing. It enables many servers to access data simultaneously by distributing operations across multiple storage resources. The aim is to support applications whose performance depends as much on input/output as on computing power.

In artificial intelligence, this infrastructure is used notably for preparing datasets, training models and saving checkpoints. DDN also works on integrating its solutions with accelerated computing platforms, particularly those from NVIDIA. Its markets include public research, life sciences, industry and media, each with different requirements in terms of capacity, throughput and availability.

What comes next?

The growth of AI opens up a market for DDN that extends beyond supercomputers alone. It also raises the requirements: simplifying operations, keeping energy consumption under control and accommodating growing data volumes without multiplying costs. Faced with general-purpose storage vendors and cloud services, the company will need to continue demonstrating the value of its specialized architectures. Its ability to translate its high-performance computing expertise into solutions accessible to enterprise IT teams will be a major challenge, alongside technical performance.
