Sierra is an American artificial intelligence company based in San Francisco. Available at sierra.ai, it designs a platform that enables brands to deploy conversational agents for their customers. Its positioning rests on a distinction: rather than merely providing information, these agents must be able to resolve a request by drawing on the company’s data, rules and tools.

Two founders from major tech platforms

Founded in 2023 and publicly unveiled in February 2024, Sierra is led by two experienced Silicon Valley figures. Bret Taylor notably served as co-CEO of Salesforce, after co-founding Quip and holding the position of chief technology officer at Facebook. Clay Bavor held leadership roles at Google, particularly in virtual and augmented reality, and later at Google Labs. Their project is part of the wave of new businesses sparked by advances in large language models.

Sierra has nevertheless chosen a specific focus: customer service. This market offers recurring use cases, already documented procedures and measurable outcomes. It also requires close integration with existing software, beyond the quality of conversations alone.

Conversations connected to operations

The platform makes it possible to build agents tailored to a brand’s identity, knowledge and business policies. Depending on the access granted and the processes configured, they can provide customers with information about an order, guide them through a return or make changes to a subscription. Sierra offers text and voice interactions, with support for multiple languages.

The system combines language models, access to company information and connections to its business tools. The challenge is to control which actions are permitted, follow procedures and hand the conversation over to a human representative when the situation requires it. The platform also includes tools to test agents, monitor their conversations and improve their behavior.

Sierra emphasizes pricing tied to outcomes achieved, rather than solely to the volume of messages exchanged. This approach requires a precise definition of what constitutes a resolved request. Companies that have publicly adopted its technology include Sonos and WeightWatchers, illustrating its focus on brands that interact directly with consumers.

What comes next?

Sierra’s trajectory will depend on its ability to make these agents reliable in situations less predictable than a demonstration. Data protection, error management and the quality of handoffs to human teams will be decisive. In competition with customer service software vendors and other AI agent specialists, its differentiation will hinge on operational integration and outcome measurement. The challenge will be to reduce the effort required of customers without imposing automation that cannot handle exceptions.
