Crusoe is an American digital infrastructure company that puts energy at the heart of its business model. Its rationale: the rise of artificial intelligence depends as much on electricity availability as on processor performance. Since its beginnings in computing located near underused energy resources, it has developed an offering that combines data centers and a GPU-powered cloud, aimed particularly at companies that train or deploy AI models.

From flared gas to AI computing

Founded in 2018 by Chase Lochmiller and Cully Cavness, Crusoe started out in Denver with an unconventional approach. It installed computing units near oil sites to use gas associated with extraction that would otherwise be flared. This energy primarily powered machines dedicated to bitcoin mining. The company thus sought to bring computing demand closer to a resource that was difficult to transport or market.

This initial business gave it experience in jointly operating energy and computing equipment. Crusoe then expanded into cloud services and AI infrastructure, whose requirements differ from those of mining: fast interconnections between processors, high-performance storage and service continuity. This shift gradually transformed its offering and its customer base.

From data centers to GPU cloud services

Crusoe operates at several levels of the value chain. The company develops and operates physical infrastructure while also offering access to accelerated computing capacity through Crusoe Cloud. Its offering relies in particular on Nvidia GPUs and targets demanding workloads: model training, fine-tuning on specialized data and inference. It serves both AI startups and organizations that already have technical teams.

The company also participates in the development of large data center campuses, notably in Abilene, Texas, at a Lancium site. These projects illustrate another dimension of its business: building infrastructure to house computing equipment at scale. Its positioning therefore goes beyond renting out servers. It also rests on finding sites, securing access to electricity and the ability to carry out complex industrial construction projects.

What next?

For Crusoe, the challenge is to turn this infrastructure expertise into a sustainable business in a cloud market dominated by major corporations. GPU availability alone is not enough: reliability, software tools, security and customer support will influence customer retention. The investment required also makes project financing and long-term commercial commitments critical.

Its environmental claims must also be assessed on a project-by-project basis. Harnessing wasted energy, using low-carbon electricity and limiting emissions across the entire life cycle are distinct approaches. As Crusoe scales up, transparency about its electricity supply and the actual footprint of its facilities is becoming an important criterion for evaluating its model.
