AST SpaceMobile, Inc. is an American space telecommunications company based in Midland, Texas. It designs infrastructure in low Earth orbit that enables compatible smartphones to communicate directly with satellites, without an external antenna or dedicated equipment. The aim is to supplement mobile networks in areas where terrestrial infrastructure is absent or inadequate. A company born from the convergence of space and telecoms

Founded in 2017 by Abel Avellan, AST SpaceMobile was built around a technical challenge: establishing a link between a satellite and a phone with limited transmission power. The company went public on Nasdaq in 2021 under the ticker symbol ASTS, following a merger with a publicly listed acquisition company. Its development combines space engineering, antenna design and integration with mobile operators’ networks.

The BlueWalker 3 demonstration satellite, launched in September 2022, was used to validate this architecture. In 2023, the company announced voice call and data connection tests, including over 5G, using ordinary smartphones. Another milestone was reached in September 2024 with the launch of the first five commercial BlueBird satellites, intended to pave the way for the service rollout.

Satellites designed as an extension of the mobile network

The system relies on large deployable antennas capable of processing signals from phones located several hundred kilometers away. The satellites are intended to connect users to a partner operator’s network, using mobile frequency bands within a framework authorized by regulators. This integration is central: AST SpaceMobile is not simply seeking to sell a standalone space-based connection, but to incorporate its service into telecom providers’ offerings.

The company has established industrial and commercial relationships with several groups, including Vodafone, AT&T and Verizon. Targeted uses include communications in rural areas, continuity of service while traveling and connectivity when ground networks become unavailable. However, available capacity, reception conditions and the number of satellites determine service quality. A technical demonstration alone therefore does not guarantee continuous coverage on a large scale.

What comes next?

The next phase depends on AST SpaceMobile’s ability to scale up satellite production, finance deployment and obtain the necessary authorizations in each market. Moving from testing to regular operations also involves coordinating frequencies with existing networks and keeping both launch and operating costs under control.

The market for direct-to-smartphone connectivity is attracting several competitors, including SpaceX and its operator partners. AST SpaceMobile will need to demonstrate the reliability and economic value of its architecture while addressing concerns about satellite brightness and orbital congestion. Its challenge now is to turn a technology validated in stages into a lasting complement to terrestrial networks.
