Founded in the United States, WEX developed a payments and expense management platform from its original fuel card business. Today, the company operates in business mobility, business-to-business payments and employee benefits administration.

WEX Inc. is an American financial technology company headquartered in Portland, Maine. Its business focuses on simplifying business expenses that combine payment, control and data processing. Through its cards, software and application programming interfaces, it supports fleet managers, travel companies and employee benefits providers, among others. Its corporate website is wexinc.com.

From fuel cards to a diversified fintech company

Founded in 1983 as Wright Express, the company initially specialized in payment cards for vehicle fleets. This positioning addressed a practical need: enabling businesses to pay for fuel purchases while tracking their drivers’ expenses. It went public in 2005 and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WEX.

The adoption of the WEX name in 2012 accompanied an expansion of its scope. Its diversification was driven by the development of its technologies and acquisitions, notably Evolution1 in healthcare solutions in 2014, followed by Electronic Funds Source in transportation-related payments in 2016. These transactions strengthened a business positioned at the intersection of financial services and management software.

Three business areas centered on corporate expenses

Mobility remains a pillar of WEX. Its solutions make it possible to configure permitted purchases, centralize billing and analyze vehicle-related expenses. For fleet managers, the value therefore extends beyond the payment method: transaction data also supports budget monitoring and the detection of unusual usage.

In business-to-business payments, WEX provides virtual cards, among other solutions, used to pay suppliers with parameters tailored to each transaction. These tools have applications in travel and corporate finance departments. Their integration with business software aims to reduce manual operations and facilitate reconciliation between orders, payments and accounting entries.

The third area concerns employee benefits, primarily in the United States. WEX offers platforms for administering accounts and programs that help fund certain healthcare expenses or other eligible costs. This business combines software, administrative management and payment methods in an environment where tax and regulatory rules play an important role.

What’s next?

The transition of fleets to electric powertrains represents a major undertaking: businesses need to be able to track fuel and charging together, despite different payment processes. WEX must also continue integrating its tools with its clients’ systems while managing fraud and cybersecurity risks. Its trajectory will depend on its ability to turn its expertise in specialized payments into useful everyday services, in a competitive market subject to regulatory requirements that vary by country.
