WeRide Inc. develops autonomous vehicles and the software needed to operate them. Its scope extends beyond passenger cars: driverless taxis, shared shuttles, delivery vehicles and urban cleaning vehicles are the main applications of its technology. The Chinese company is targeting Level 4 autonomy in particular, in which the system handles driving without human intervention on board, but within a defined area and under specified conditions. This is a crucial distinction from the promise of a car capable of driving anywhere, in any circumstances.

From Guangzhou to international markets

Founded in 2017 by a team including Tony Han, an artificial intelligence specialist and former head of autonomous driving at Baidu, WeRide grew around Guangzhou. The southern Chinese metropolis served as a testing ground for its robotaxis before the company expanded its activities to other cities and vehicle categories.

Its history mirrors the sector’s evolution: technological demonstrations must be followed by securing permits, organizing operations and winning over industrial partners. Listed on Nasdaq in 2024, WeRide has also raised its profile among international investors. Its expansion includes the United Arab Emirates and Singapore, where regulatory frameworks and local projects make it possible to test different uses of autonomous mobility.

One platform, several lines of business

The technical foundation combines environmental perception, localization, prediction of other road users’ behavior and trajectory planning. These functions rely on sensors and onboard software, supplemented by monitoring tools. Adapting them to multiple vehicles allows WeRide to seek opportunities beyond robotaxis alone, whose deployment remains dependent on local permits and operational constraints.

The shuttles meet transport needs along designated routes; the delivery and urban cleaning vehicles target more specialized tasks. WeRide also develops driver assistance solutions for automakers. These systems should not be confused with its autonomous offerings: depending on their level, they require the driver to remain responsible and attentive.

Partnerships play a central role in this strategy. With Renault, WeRide showcased autonomous shuttles during the French Open in 2024. With Uber, it began a commercial robotaxi rollout in Abu Dhabi. These collaborations provide industrial or commercial support without removing the safety and oversight requirements specific to each jurisdiction.

What comes next?

For WeRide, the challenge is now as much operational as technological. The viability of its services will depend on vehicle costs, availability, supervision needs and integration with existing transport systems. International expansion also requires navigating different rules on testing, operations and data. Its ability to replicate a reliable service from one city to another will be decisive in moving from controlled deployments to a sustainable business.
