Valve Corporation is an American video game company based in Bellevue, Washington. Known for the Half-Life, Portal and Counter-Strike series, it also operates Steam, a digital distribution platform that has become central to its business. Its model thus combines intellectual property, services for players and developers, and hardware designed to broaden the ways people play on PC. Its corporate website is valvesoftware.com.

From its beginnings with Half-Life to the rise of Steam

Valve was founded in 1996 by Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington, two former Microsoft employees. Its first game, Half-Life, was released in 1998. It stood out for its storytelling integrated into the action and helped establish the studio’s reputation. The company also developed ties with creator communities: Counter-Strike began as a Half-Life modification before joining its catalogue.

Launched in 2003, Steam initially served to distribute and update Valve’s games. The platform later opened up to third-party publishers and became a storefront combined with a range of services. This evolution gradually transformed Valve: the development studio also became an intermediary between creators, publishers and players. The company remains privately held, and its publicly available financial information is limited.

A business spanning platforms, games and hardware

Steam forms the core of its ecosystem. Beyond purchasing and downloading games, the platform offers automatic updates, cloud saves, community features and discovery tools. For studios, Steamworks services notably facilitate the integration of multiplayer features, achievements and certain commercial functions. Valve generates revenue from its own releases and from commissions on transactions made on its platform.

Game development remains another component of its business, notably with Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2, whose ongoing support relies on updates and active communities. The company also invests in virtual reality, with the Valve Index headset and the game Half-Life: Alyx.

Released in 2022, the Steam Deck extends this hardware strategy. This handheld gaming PC runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. The Proton compatibility layer allows it to run many games designed for Windows, without guaranteeing universal compatibility.

What next?

For Valve, the challenge is to maintain Steam’s appeal while developing ways to play that are less dependent on Windows desktop PCs. SteamOS and the Steam Deck are key tools in this direction. Software compatibility, ease of use and device battery life will remain decisive factors in their adoption.

The platform must also contend with competition from other storefronts, developers’ expectations regarding visibility and the regulatory requirements applicable to digital services. Its trajectory will depend on its ability to reconcile its role as a commercial intermediary with that of a game and technology developer.
