u-blox Holding AG develops technologies that enable machines to know where they are. This Swiss semiconductor company specializes in satellite positioning, with components and modules designed to be integrated into other manufacturers’ products. Its role is therefore often invisible to the end user: its solutions equip embedded systems, professional instruments and tracking devices, rather than devices marketed under its own brand.

From Zurich research to international markets

Founded in 1997 by researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, u-blox built its business around satellite navigation signal processing. Its headquarters are in Thalwil, in the canton of Zurich. The company was listed on the Swiss stock exchange in 2007, a milestone in its international development.

Over the course of its history, it has expanded its portfolio beyond positioning, notably into cellular communications and short-range wireless connectivity. This trajectory has placed it at the intersection of two needs for connected devices: knowing their location and transmitting data. Positioning nevertheless remains a central element of its technological identity, from miniaturized receivers to applications requiring high accuracy.

Components and services for harnessing GNSS signals

u-blox’s positioning solutions use global navigation satellite systems, collectively known as GNSS. Depending on the product, they use several constellations, such as GPS, Galileo, BeiDou or GLONASS. Combining signals and frequency bands helps improve positioning availability and accuracy, particularly when the surrounding environment disrupts reception.

The offering includes integrated circuits and modules that bring together several functions in a package ready for integration. This approach reduces some of the design work required of customers. Some products also combine satellite measurements with information from inertial sensors to maintain an estimate of motion when satellite signals become less accessible.

Services complement this hardware. AssistNow notably facilitates signal acquisition, while PointPerfect provides correction data for high-precision positioning. Applications include automotive navigation, robotics, precision agriculture and asset tracking. Time synchronization is another application: satellite signals provide a useful reference for certain communications infrastructure and industrial facilities.

What’s next?

For u-blox, prospects depend in particular on the growth of autonomous machines and applications requiring reliable positioning. The challenge is no longer limited to improving accuracy: it also involves managing power consumption, simplifying integration and improving resistance to signal jamming or spoofing. In a competitive market, the interplay between components, software and correction services offers a tangible means of differentiation, subject to the cost requirements and qualification cycles of industrial customers.
