Spire Global, Inc. is an American space company that transforms signals captured from low Earth orbit into actionable information for businesses and public agencies. Its model combines a constellation of small satellites, ground stations and processing software. Rather than focusing on imagery, Spire relies primarily on receiving radio signals to observe the atmosphere and track certain human activities. Its corporate website is spire.com.

From its first nanosatellites to the stock market

Established in 2012 under the name NanoSatisfi, the company was co-founded by Peter Platzer, Jeroen Cappaert and Joel Spark. It is part of the development of CubeSats, small standardized satellites that have helped reduce the cost of access to space. Renamed Spire Global, it gradually developed its LEMUR constellation and an organization encompassing satellite design, orbital operations and the commercial use of data.

Its stock market listing in New York in 2021, through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, accompanied this phase of expansion. The company has also built an international presence, particularly in Europe, where it has technical and industrial capabilities. This presence enables it to work with both commercial customers and institutional players in the space sector.

Observing, modeling and hosting missions

Meteorology is one of its main areas of activity. Spire’s satellites measure, among other things, how signals from navigation systems pass through the atmosphere. This technique, known as radio occultation, makes it possible to derive information about temperature, pressure and humidity. These observations feed into forecasting models, with applications for weather services, energy, transportation and agriculture.

In aviation, receiving aircraft transmissions from space complements ground-based systems, particularly over oceans and regions with limited infrastructure. Spire also developed a maritime tracking business using ships’ AIS signals. The sale of this business to Kpler, announced in late 2024, marks a significant shift in its portfolio.

Through its Space Services offering, the company makes its expertise available to third parties: mission design, payload integration, and satellite deployment and operation. The aim is to enable customers to acquire space capabilities without having to build all the necessary infrastructure themselves.

What next?

For Spire, the challenge is to convert its orbital capabilities into recurring revenue while keeping the cost of renewing its constellation under control. Demand for better weather forecasts and outsourced space services provides a market opportunity, but institutional sales cycles can be long. Its trajectory will depend in particular on data quality, integration into customers’ tools and its ability to fund its infrastructure sustainably. In this model, value is measured as much by the usefulness of services on Earth as by the number of satellites deployed.
