A company born from the deal between Intel and SK hynix
Solidigm was established in December 2021 as part of the first phase of SK hynix’s acquisition of Intel’s NAND and SSD businesses. The transaction transferred some of the former owner’s teams, products and expertise to a new organization. It did not include all of Intel’s memory businesses, notably Optane technology.
The company thus benefits from an industrial and commercial legacy that predates its establishment. It continues Intel’s work on SSDs while operating within the organization of a major memory manufacturer. This arrangement combines storage systems expertise, relationships with business customers and the industrial backing of the SK hynix group.
SSDs designed for data center requirements
Solidigm develops SSDs for servers, cloud platforms and enterprise infrastructure, among other applications. Its portfolio includes product lines using TLC memory, which stores three bits per cell, and QLC memory, which stores four. The latter increases storage density, with trade-offs in endurance and performance that need to be considered depending on the use case.
The company’s work extends beyond memory chips. Controllers, firmware and software tools contribute to product reliability, write management and consistent response times. For data center operators, choosing an SSD depends as much on these characteristics as on its nominal capacity.
Target use cases include hosting large data collections, analytics and certain stages of artificial intelligence processing pipelines. Storage must feed computing resources without becoming a bottleneck. Depending on the application, customers primarily seek high throughput, low latency or substantial capacity in a small footprint.
What’s next?
The growth in data volumes and AI infrastructure creates a market opportunity for Solidigm, but does not eliminate economic trade-offs. SSDs continue to compete with hard drives for use cases that prioritize cost per unit of capacity. The challenge will be to demonstrate the value of flash on an application-by-application basis, factoring in power consumption, density, maintenance and performance. In a cyclical and competitive market, Solidigm will also need to maintain a balance between capacity, endurance and cost while supporting changes in storage architectures.
