Founded in the United States as a student loan refinancing business, SoFi Technologies has expanded its offering to cover individuals’ main financial needs. The group now combines a digital bank with technology infrastructure marketed to other financial players.

SoFi Technologies is an American financial services and banking technology group based in San Francisco. Available on sofi.com and through its mobile app, its offering brings together lending, bank accounts, savings and investing. Its distinctive feature is its dual focus: serving individuals directly and providing technical tools to other businesses. This combination places it at the intersection of retail banking, fintech and payment infrastructure.

From student loan refinancing to a banking license

Founded in 2011, SoFi, short for Social Finance, initially developed around financing and refinancing higher education. Its original model relied on connections between alumni and students, before evolving into a more conventional lending business. The company particularly targets graduates with favorable income prospects, offering them ways to restructure their student debt.

Under the leadership of Anthony Noto, appointed chief executive officer in 2018, SoFi continues to diversify. The group went public on Nasdaq in 2021 through a merger with a publicly traded acquisition vehicle, or SPAC. In 2022, its acquisition of Golden Pacific Bancorp and receipt of regulatory approvals enabled it to launch SoFi Bank. This change gives it access to bank deposits to fund part of its lending, while also increasing its prudential obligations.

A financial app and technology for businesses

For individuals, SoFi offers personal loans, mortgages and student loan refinancing, among other products. Its app also brings together checking and savings accounts, investment services and financial tracking tools. Some offerings, particularly insurance, rely on partners. Its commercial objective is to support the same customer through several stages of their financial life, rather than limiting the relationship to a one-off loan.

The second pillar is technology. With Galileo, acquired in 2020, SoFi has a platform that enables fintechs and other businesses to manage accounts, cards and transactions, among other functions. The acquisition of Technisys in 2022 complements this offering with core banking software. These business-to-business activities provide a revenue source distinct from interest earned on loans and give the group exposure to markets beyond its American retail customer base.

What next?

SoFi’s trajectory depends on its ability to turn its expanded offering into lasting customer relationships. Attracting deposits, encouraging regular use of its services and controlling customer acquisition costs are important levers. At the same time, the group must monitor the quality of its loan portfolio, which is sensitive to employment, interest rates and household finances.

In infrastructure, the challenge is to persuade banks and fintechs to modernize their systems using its solutions, despite often lengthy decision-making cycles. SoFi will therefore need to coordinate two businesses with different constraints: a regulated bank that bears financial risk, and a technology provider expected to deliver reliable platforms and seamless integration.
