Sinch AB (publ) is a Swedish group specializing in cloud-based business communications. Its infrastructure enables businesses to send delivery notifications, transmit authentication codes, initiate calls or manage conversations with customer service teams. Positioned between telecom operators and business applications, Sinch operates in the communications platform as a service, or CPaaS, sector. Its customers can integrate these functions into their software without building the necessary connections to telecom networks themselves.
From CLX Communications to Sinch
The company traces its origins to CLX Communications, founded in Sweden in 2008. It initially developed a business focused on mobile communications and relationships with operators. Listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2015, it adopted the name Sinch in 2019. This change accompanied the expansion of its offering beyond message transmission to tools for developers and customer relations teams.
Acquisitions have played an important role in this journey. The acquisition of SAP Digital Interconnect in 2020 strengthened its messaging operations. In 2021, Inteliquent brought voice communications infrastructure, particularly in the United States, while MessageMedia expanded its business messaging solutions. That same year, the acquisition of Pathwire added a range of email services, including Mailgun and Mailjet. This expansion gradually transformed Sinch into a multichannel provider.
From software interfaces to telecom networks
The core offering relies on application programming interfaces, or APIs, through which an application can initiate a communication. SMS is used in particular for transactional alerts and authentication. Voice services allow calls to be integrated into a customer journey. Email covers both automated messages and marketing campaigns. Sinch also offers services for exchanges on channels such as WhatsApp and RCS, which enable richer interactions than traditional SMS.
In addition to this technical layer, there are tools that can be used by teams without specialist development skills. The aim is to connect the sending, receiving and tracking of messages to sales or support processes. Service quality depends as much on software as on connectivity, deliverability and the management of local constraints. Relationships with operators, fraud prevention and data protection are therefore important aspects of its business.
What next?
For Sinch, the challenge is to bring coherence to a portfolio built partly through acquisitions while maintaining reliable communications. The development of RCS and conversational interfaces opens up new use cases, but removes neither regulatory constraints nor competitive pressure. Artificial intelligence can help automate exchanges; its value, however, will depend on how it is integrated into customer journeys. The ability to combine multiple channels, control routing costs and limit unwanted messages will remain decisive going forward.
