Open Text Corporation develops software designed to organize, use and protect corporate information. Based in Waterloo, in the Canadian province of Ontario, the group primarily serves large organizations handling substantial volumes of documents, data and digital communications. Its offering combines business applications, software infrastructure and services, with cloud, on-premises or hybrid deployments. Its corporate website is available at opentext.com.

From academic roots to an international group

Founded in 1991, OpenText has its origins in work carried out at the University of Waterloo on searching and indexing digital texts, notably as part of the computerization of the Oxford English Dictionary. This background explains its initial focus: making large volumes of content accessible and usable through software.

The company subsequently expanded into electronic document management and enterprise content management. Acquisitions have played a defining role in this development. The acquisition of GXS in 2014 strengthened its business-to-business electronic data exchange activities. The purchase of Dell EMC’s enterprise content management division, completed in 2017, notably brought Documentum into its portfolio. With Carbonite in 2019, followed by Micro Focus in 2023, OpenText extended its reach into data protection and a broader range of enterprise software.

Connecting content, processes and IT systems

Information management remains OpenText’s historical foundation. Its solutions enable organizations to classify documents, manage access rights, track their lifecycle and integrate them into operational processes. They address, in particular, the traceability, archiving and compliance needs of organizations subject to regulatory requirements.

The group also facilitates the flow of data between trading partners: orders, invoices and other structured messages can pass through its networks and integration platforms. These activities are complemented by cybersecurity, data backup and recovery, as well as IT operations management and software development tools. This combination allows it to cover several layers of an organization’s information system, while requiring ongoing integration work between products from different origins.

What next?

Following the acquisition of Micro Focus, portfolio coherence is a central challenge. The 2024 sale to Rocket Software of the application modernization and connectivity business inherited from that acquisition illustrates the strategic choices being made across this expanded portfolio. OpenText must continue integrating its offerings without complicating its customers’ migration paths.

The growing use of artificial intelligence also opens up opportunities to search, summarize and use business content. However, adoption depends on data quality, adherence to access permissions and control over sensitive information. For OpenText, the challenge will be to turn its experience in document governance into useful services, while supporting its customers’ gradual transition to the cloud.
