Nexperia occupies an often overlooked link in the semiconductor industry: components that switch current, protect circuits and perform basic logic functions. Based in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, the company supplies diodes, transistors and integrated circuits, among other products. Its products do not perform the complex calculations of a processor, but they are essential to the operation of electronic circuit boards, from automotive embedded systems to power supplies.

European origins, an international trajectory

Nexperia became an independent company in 2017, following the sale of NXP’s “Standard Products” business to a consortium of investors. Its industrial roots go back to Philips, whose semiconductor division gave rise to NXP. This lineage explains its European footprint and its experience in manufacturing components in high volumes.

In 2019, Nexperia came under the control of the Chinese group Wingtech. Since then, its trajectory has stood at the intersection of industrial considerations and concerns over technological sovereignty. The case of the British factory in Newport illustrates this: acquired in 2021, it became the subject of a British decision requiring its divestment on national security grounds. Its sale to Vishay was completed in 2024.

From discrete components to power electronics

Nexperia’s portfolio includes MOSFETs and bipolar transistors, diodes, electrostatic discharge protection components, as well as logic and analog circuits. These products meet practical needs: driving a load, limiting electrical losses, adapting a signal or protecting an interface. In the automotive sector and industry, their value rests as much on their reliability, qualification and long-term availability as on their performance.

The group combines design, chip manufacturing, assembly and testing, with operations spread across Europe and Asia. Its industrial locations include Hamburg and Manchester, as well as Asian sites dedicated to the final stages of production. This control over several links in the chain is an important part of its business model. Nexperia is also expanding its power electronics offering, particularly around gallium nitride and silicon carbide, materials suited to certain applications seeking greater energy efficiency.

What next?

Vehicle electrification, industrial automation and the pursuit of more efficient power supplies create markets for its components. These prospects, however, remain tied to demand cycles, pricing pressure and customers’ technological choices. For Nexperia, the challenge is to develop its product range without losing the strengths of its standard products: controlled costs, compact size and repeatable production. Supply security and geopolitical constraints will also weigh on its industrial decisions. Its trajectory is a reminder that technological competition also takes place in basic components, not just advanced processors.
