Nexi S.p.A. is an Italian group specialising in digital payments, headquartered in Milan. Its business is to enable merchants to accept payments and banks to offer transaction services to their customers. Behind payment terminals, online purchases and certain banking operations, Nexi provides some of the technical tools needed to process and secure transactions.

From banking roots to a European scale

The Nexi brand emerged in 2017, building on the activities of the Istituto Centrale delle Banche Popolari Italiane, known by the acronym ICBPI, and CartaSi. This heritage explains the group’s close ties with Italian banks, which have long been central to the distribution of its services. Nexi has been listed on the Milan Stock Exchange since 2019.

Its subsequent growth in scale was driven by two transformative mergers: with Nets, a payments provider operating notably in Northern Europe, and with SIA, an Italian specialist in financial technology infrastructure and services. These transactions extended its geographical reach and broadened its expertise. They also created an ongoing challenge: bringing together platforms, organisations and offerings from different markets.

Services for merchants and banks

Nexi’s activities span several links in the payment chain. For merchants, the group offers in-store and online payment acceptance solutions: terminals, payment interfaces and acquiring services that enable card payments to be processed. The aim is to connect the shopping journey with payment operations, using tools suited to both small retailers and businesses operating across multiple channels.

For banks, Nexi handles card issuance and management, transaction processing and services associated with card use. The group also provides digital banking and interbank payment infrastructure. This presence both upstream and downstream of transactions sets it apart from fintech companies focused on a consumer app. Its model relies heavily on contracts and partnerships with players that retain the commercial relationship with the end user.

What next?

The growth of electronic payments offers opportunities for Nexi, but requires continuous investment in system availability, cybersecurity and fraud prevention. The development of instant transfers and changes in European rules may also reshape usage patterns and the distribution of value among banks, card networks and technical service providers.

For the group, the challenge is therefore as much operational as commercial: simplifying its architecture following the mergers, pooling its development efforts and maintaining service quality. In competition with international payment specialists and new banking solutions, its ability to combine a local presence with shared platforms will be decisive. Its Italian website, nexi.it, presents, among other things, its offerings for businesses and merchants.
