Nemetschek plays a pivotal role in computing for the building industry. The German group provides tools that support professionals from the design of a building through to its operation, including the coordination of design work and construction monitoring. Its organization is built around several specialized brands rather than a single platform. This approach allows it to address the distinct working practices of architects, engineers, construction companies and property managers.

Roots in German engineering

The story begins in 1963, when engineer Georg Nemetschek founded a structural engineering consultancy in Munich. The use of computing to facilitate calculations and design gradually became the core of his business. The development of Allplan marked this shift toward software publishing for building professionals. Listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 1999, Nemetschek subsequently expanded through organic growth and acquisitions. Graphisoft, the developer of Archicad, followed by Bluebeam, were among the acquisitions that strengthened its international presence. The group retains a federated identity: its brands have their own products, professional communities and sales channels.

Connecting design, construction and operation

BIM, or building information modeling, is a central pillar of its offering. It links a digital representation of a building with data useful to the various stakeholders. Allplan, Graphisoft and Vectorworks offer design environments suited to multiple disciplines. Solibri handles model checking and the detection of inconsistencies, while Bluebeam develops collaborative tools for construction documents and drawings.

Nemetschek also advocates openBIM, an approach based on interoperability and open standards, particularly the IFC format. The aim is to facilitate exchanges between software applications and organizations without imposing a single technical environment. In property operations, solutions such as those from Spacewell cover space and facilities management. The acquisition of GoCanvas, announced in 2024, extends the group’s capabilities in data collection and the digitization of field processes. Alongside these activities, Maxon develops Cinema 4D, Redshift and ZBrush, among other products, used in digital content creation, animation and visual effects.

What next?

The shift toward subscriptions and cloud services is transforming Nemetschek’s business model, as it is for many software publishers. Its challenge is to connect its applications more closely while preserving their specialization. Artificial intelligence opens up opportunities to automate certain tasks, assist with design and leverage project data, but their value will depend on the reliability of the results and their integration into professional workflows. Demand for renovation, traceability and environmental impact measurement also offers opportunities. Turning these into business remains dependent on customer budgets and conditions in the construction industry.
