Microchip Technology Incorporated is an American semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Chandler, Arizona. Its components provide computing, control, communication and power management functions within electronic equipment. Less visible to the general public than suppliers of processors for computers or smartphones, the company plays an important role in embedded electronics, where reliability, power consumption and product availability matter as much as performance.

A history built around embedded control

Founded in 1989 from General Instrument’s semiconductor business, Microchip grew around microcontrollers, particularly the PIC family. Listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol MCHP, the group has gradually expanded its catalog through organic growth and acquisitions. The acquisition of Atmel in 2016 notably added AVR microcontrollers and strengthened its Arm-based offering. The acquisition of Microsemi in 2018 expanded its presence in programmable circuits, power components and demanding applications in aerospace, defense and communications infrastructure.

Chips, but also a development environment

The portfolio includes 8-, 16- and 32-bit microcontrollers, microprocessors and dsPIC digital signal controllers. These components control everything from industrial motors to user interfaces and connected equipment. Microchip also markets analog circuits, memory devices, power management solutions and communication components, particularly for Ethernet networks and automotive links.

With its FPGAs, including the PolarFire range, the company addresses the need for configurable hardware processing. It also offers security components and products suited to demanding environments. This diversity allows designers to source several system functions from a single supplier, without every product necessarily using the same manufacturing process.

The offering is supported by software, libraries, evaluation boards, and programming and debugging tools. The MPLAB environment notably supports development across several of the group’s product families. For industrial customers, this ecosystem helps reduce integration work and maintain equipment over long life cycles. The microchip.com website brings together technical documentation, design resources and product information.

What next?

Microchip must navigate the inventory and investment cycles inherent to the semiconductor industry while supporting electrification, automation and the proliferation of connected devices. The development of artificial intelligence processing directly within equipment also opens up opportunities, under tight energy and cost constraints. Its ability to combine embedded computing, security, connectivity and software tools will be decisive. The challenge is less about consistently pursuing the smallest process node than about offering reliable platforms that remain available over the long term and meet designers’ practical constraints.
