An American data management software vendor, Informatica helps companies integrate, improve the reliability of, and govern their information. Its shift toward the cloud and its tie-up with Salesforce place these capabilities at the heart of the challenges surrounding artificial intelligence.

Informatica Inc. develops software designed to make corporate data usable, consistent, and traceable. Based in Redwood City, California, the company operates between business applications, databases, and analytics platforms. Its role includes connecting heterogeneous systems and preparing the information that feeds business processes, dashboards, and artificial intelligence applications.

A history rooted in data integration

Founded in 1993 by Gaurav Dhillon and Diaz Nesamoney, Informatica grew around data integration. Its PowerCenter software is associated with ETL processes: extracting information from different sources, transforming it, and then loading it into a target system, particularly a data warehouse. This business supported the rise of business intelligence in large organizations.

The company went public in 1999 and was taken private in 2015 following its acquisition by a consortium of investors, before returning to the stock market in 2021. It gradually expanded its portfolio beyond data flows while shifting its offering toward cloud services.

Integrating, ensuring reliability, and governing

The Intelligent Data Management Cloud platform, or IDMC, brings together several categories of services: data and application integration, data quality, cataloging, governance, and master data management. The latter makes it possible, for example, to reconcile multiple representations of the same customer, product, or supplier to create information shared across different departments.

The catalog and governance features help organizations identify their data, understand its origins, and document its uses. Data quality aims to detect and correct inconsistencies that can distort an analysis or disrupt a process. Informatica also uses artificial intelligence in its tools, notably under the CLAIRE brand, to assist with certain discovery, preparation, and administration tasks.

The vendor primarily serves organizations dealing with complex IT landscapes that combine legacy systems, online software, and cloud infrastructure. It operates within the ecosystem of major cloud providers and data platforms. Its value proposition rests on continuity of processing across these environments, rather than on replacing all existing databases and applications.

What now?

The tie-up with Salesforce, announced in 2025, places Informatica within a strategy combining enterprise data, business applications, and artificial intelligence agents. The challenge is concrete: an AI system cannot produce reliable results without relevant, accessible, and properly governed information.

For Informatica, the next phase also hinges on modernizing legacy installations and managing operational complexity. Preserving interoperability with diverse environments, simplifying migrations, and demonstrating the economic value of data quality remain long-term challenges, beyond the current enthusiasm for AI alone.
