HTC Corporation is a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, historically associated with smartphones and now primarily known for its VIVE immersive ecosystem. Its journey illustrates the transformations of the hardware sector: designing for other brands, developing consumer products, then seeking opportunities in professional markets. With a presence at htc.com, the company combines hardware engineering, software interfaces and services designed to support the use of its devices.

From mobile devices to the shift toward virtual reality

Founded in 1997 in Taiwan, HTC initially developed handheld computers and mobile devices on behalf of partners. It became known for devices running Microsoft’s mobile operating systems before marketing more products under its own brand. In 2008, the HTC Dream, also sold as the T-Mobile G1, became the first commercially available Android smartphone.

The HTC One range and the Sense interface then helped shape its identity. But competition from Apple, Samsung and Chinese manufacturers weakened its smartphone business. In 2018, Google finalized a deal that notably included bringing on board some of the HTC teams that had worked on Pixel smartphones. Meanwhile, HTC invested in virtual reality: the first VIVE headset, developed with Valve, went on sale in 2016.

VIVE, a range of hardware and services

HTC’s immersive activities span several equipment categories: computer-connected headsets, standalone models, motion-tracking devices and accessories. The VIVE Pro, VIVE Focus and VIVE XR families illustrate this diversification. Depending on the product, the aim is to prioritize the quality of the experience, freedom of movement or the combination of digital elements with the physical environment.

The group does more than sell headsets. It also offers management and deployment tools for organizations, as well as content distribution services, including VIVEPORT. Its offering targets uses such as training, simulation, project visualization and remote collaboration. These markets require coordination between hardware, applications and support, often involving specialized partners.

HTC also maintains a presence in smartphones in certain markets. However, this business no longer holds the position it once did when the brand was among the most prominent players in the Android ecosystem.

What now?

HTC’s trajectory depends largely on the adoption of virtual and mixed reality beyond early adopters. Facing competitors such as Meta and Apple, the company must demonstrate the relevance of its equipment and the coherence of its software offering. Professional uses provide an avenue for differentiation, but their development remains tied to the total cost of deployments, headset comfort and the availability of useful applications. The challenge will be less about multiplying immersive promises than about demonstrating measurable benefits and retaining organizations that have adopted its equipment.
