Grab Holdings Limited plays an important role in everyday travel in Southeast Asia. Based in Singapore, the company connects individuals, drivers, delivery workers and merchants through an app that brings together on-demand transport, food delivery and financial services. Its model relies on a shared digital infrastructure to meet several everyday needs in a region where usage patterns, payment methods and transport regulations vary considerably from one country to another.

From taxi booking to a regional platform

The venture began in Malaysia in 2012 with MyTeksi, a taxi-booking service launched by Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling. The initial aim was to make it easier to connect passengers with drivers while improving service reliability. The company then expanded into several neighbouring countries, adopted the Grab brand and established its headquarters in Singapore.

A defining milestone came in 2018, when Grab took over Uber’s operations in Southeast Asia. This deal strengthened its regional presence while drawing the attention of competition authorities. In 2021, the group listed on Nasdaq through a merger with a publicly listed acquisition company. Going public raised expectations regarding its financial discipline, following several years focused on expansion and user acquisition.

Mobility at the heart of a range of services

Ride booking remains one of Grab’s core activities. Depending on the market, the platform provides access to private-hire cars, taxis or two-wheelers. It provides tools for booking, fare estimation, payment and trip tracking. Driver availability, mapping quality and matching supply to demand are essential factors in its operation.

Alongside this activity, Grab has developed food delivery through GrabFood, as well as grocery and parcel delivery services. For restaurants and retailers, the platform serves as a sales channel, a logistics solution and an advertising medium. The group also offers payment, financing and insurance solutions, either directly or with partners, depending on regulatory frameworks. Its digital banking operations extend this diversification in certain markets.

What next?

For Grab, the next step is to turn this diversity of uses into sustainable profitability without reducing service accessibility or partners’ earnings. Improvements to forecasting, ride allocation and fraud prevention tools can support this goal. But technology alone cannot resolve the model’s constraints: local competition, urban congestion, social protection for workers and financial services regulation remain decisive factors. The group’s ability to adapt its offering country by country will therefore be just as important as integrating new features into its app.
