Fujitsu is a Japanese technology group whose scope extends far beyond software. It designs IT infrastructure, develops applications and provides consulting, integration and operational services. Its clients include industrial companies, financial institutions, retailers and public bodies. With an international presence, particularly in Europe, it works on both modernizing legacy systems and deploying new digital services. Its corporate website is fujitsu.com.

From telecommunications to computing

The company was established in 1935 under the name Fuji Tsushinki Manufacturing, as an extension of Fuji Electric’s telecommunications activities. It initially developed communication equipment before moving into computing. In 1954, it introduced the FACOM 100, a relay-based computer that marked a milestone in its evolution toward data processing.

Over the decades, Fujitsu built a business spanning mainframes, servers, IT equipment and services. Its international expansion relied in particular on the British company ICL, which was gradually integrated into the group. This history explains its current positioning: that of a provider capable of connecting physical infrastructure with business applications, with an understanding of mission-critical environments and the constraints specific to large organizations.

Software, cloud and business transformation

In software, Fujitsu combines internally developed technologies, partner solutions and engineering services. Its teams work on application modernization, packaged software integration, data management and process automation. The group also supports cloud migrations and the operation of hybrid environments, where private data centers coexist with platforms from external providers.

Launched in 2021, the Fujitsu Uvance brand brings together offerings designed to address economic and environmental challenges. It covers industrial transformation, supply chains, customer experience and data use, among other areas. The aim is to bring the group’s technological capabilities closer to the operational problems its clients face.

Fujitsu also maintains expertise in high-performance computing and computer science research. The Fugaku supercomputer, developed with Japan’s RIKEN institute, is one example. This work feeds into its activities in simulation, artificial intelligence and computing architectures, while remaining distinct from its enterprise software offering.

What next?

Fujitsu’s trajectory rests on the development of digital services and a more integrated approach to bringing its expertise to market. Artificial intelligence opens up opportunities in user assistance, document analysis and software development, but requires careful management of confidentiality, reliability and operating costs.

Trust is also a central issue. In the United Kingdom, the scandal involving the Horizon system, supplied to the Post Office, highlighted the human and legal consequences of IT failures. For Fujitsu, transformation must therefore be measured as much by the quality and governance of its solutions as by their commercial adoption.
