Fivetran, Inc. is an American company specializing in data integration and replication. Its platform connects business applications, databases and files to environments where this information can be analyzed. It thus handles a step that often goes unnoticed but is essential: supplying business intelligence tools with regularly updated data. Its website, fivetran.com, presents its connectors and various deployment options.

From manual pipelines to an automated service

Founded in 2012 by George Fraser and Taylor Brown, Fivetran grew out of an observation: companies devote considerable resources to building and then maintaining the flows connecting their operational systems to their analytics tools. Changes to data structures or software interfaces make these custom-built solutions fragile. The company therefore made connector standardization and maintenance a central part of its offering.

Its growth has accompanied the rise of cloud data warehouses. In 2021, the acquisition of HVR strengthened its replication capabilities, particularly for large databases and complex IT environments.

Connecting sources, feeding analytics platforms

Fivetran offers connectors for business management software, marketing tools, financial services and transactional databases. Data can be transferred to destinations such as Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift or Databricks. The platform handles synchronization and some of the adjustments required by changes to source systems, helping to limit recurring technical intervention.

This approach primarily follows the ELT model: data is extracted, loaded into a destination and then transformed for analytics use. Fivetran also offers features related to transformation orchestration, particularly around dbt. For compatible databases, change data capture, or CDC, allows changes to be replicated without systematically copying the entire dataset.

Its users are primarily data and IT teams that feed dashboards, prepare analyses or centralize scattered information. Fivetran replaces neither the data warehouse nor visualization tools: it supplies them with data. The choice of such a solution therefore depends on connector coverage, synchronization frequency, security constraints and the cost associated with the volumes processed.

What’s next?

The growing use of artificial intelligence makes accessible, up-to-date data increasingly valuable. However, it does not eliminate questions of quality, access rights or governance, which extend beyond data transport alone. For Fivetran, the challenge will be to combine automation, cost control and adaptation to hybrid architectures. In competition with services from major cloud providers and open integration solutions, its ability to simplify pipeline operations over the long term will remain a differentiating factor, beyond the number of connectors offered.
