Fiserv, Inc. is an American financial technology group headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Its business consists of providing some of the IT infrastructure that enables banks, credit unions and merchants to operate on a daily basis. Often largely invisible to consumers, it works behind the scenes in account management, card processing, digital payments and in-store terminals. Its corporate website is fiserv.com.

Growth through acquisitions

Founded in 1984, Fiserv grew by providing outsourced IT processing for American financial institutions. Its development has relied on a combination of organic growth and acquisitions, enabling it to gradually expand its portfolio beyond its traditional banking software.

Two deals illustrate this evolution. The acquisition of CheckFree in 2007 strengthened its capabilities in electronic bill payments and digital financial services. The acquisition of First Data, completed in 2019, significantly expanded its presence in payment acceptance and merchant services. The latter acquisition also brought Clover into the group. Fiserv thus combines businesses serving financial institutions with others geared toward companies that accept payments from their customers.

From banking systems to merchant counters

For banks and credit unions, Fiserv offers solutions for account management, digital banking, card processing and payment flows. These tools fit into complex IT systems, where service availability, security and regulatory compliance are critical. The group also provides technologies for fraud prevention and the use of transaction data.

For merchants, its offering covers payment acceptance and processing, both online and at the point of sale. Clover combines payment hardware, software and applications to meet needs such as sales, inventory and customer relationship management. Payments thus become the gateway to a broader set of management tools.

This positioning relies on direct customer relationships as well as distribution partnerships, particularly with banks. Depending on the offering, revenue combines processing fees, software subscriptions and service fees. The business therefore depends on both transaction volumes and the adoption of additional features.

What next?

For Fiserv, the challenge is to modernize critical infrastructure without compromising its continuity. The development of instant payments, the opening up of services through application programming interfaces and the shift toward the cloud are key strategic priorities. In commerce, Clover must compete with platforms that combine payments and business software. The ability to simplify its offering, keep fraud under control and address regulatory requirements that vary by country will shape its future development.
