Epic Games is an American video game and digital creation technology company based in Cary, North Carolina. Known to the general public for Fortnite, it also plays a foundational role in interactive content production through Unreal Engine. Its business combines game development, online service operations, distribution and the provision of tools for creators. Its official website is epicgames.com.
From early games to a global ecosystem
Founded in 1991 by Tim Sweeney under the name Potomac Computer Systems, the company became Epic MegaGames, then Epic Games in 1999. It notably gained recognition with Unreal, released in 1998, whose technology forms the foundation of Unreal Engine. The engine gradually became a product intended for other studios, alongside the company’s own creations.
The Gears of War series subsequently helped establish its reputation on consoles. In 2017, Fortnite marked a major leap in scale, particularly with its free Battle Royale mode. Its seasons, events and collaborations with cultural brands make it an evolving service rather than a static game. Tencent acquired a minority stake in Epic Games in 2012.
Games, engine and digital distribution
Epic Games’ portfolio also includes Rocket League and Fall Guys, following the acquisitions of their studios, Psyonix and Mediatonic. These games rely on online communities and business models combining free access with optional purchases. Fortnite also hosts experiences designed by external creators, notably through Unreal Editor for Fortnite, launched in 2023.
Unreal Engine forms the company’s other main pillar. Used to design games across multiple platforms, the engine also supports virtual production for film and television, architectural visualization and automotive applications. Epic thus combines activities aimed at players with a technology offering for professionals.
Launched in 2018, the Epic Games Store distributes computer games and seeks to attract developers and users through its commercial terms and regular game giveaways. This activity puts Epic in competition with Steam. The company also provides technical services that notably enable interactions between players on different platforms to be managed.
What next?
Epic Games is pursuing a strategy that brings entertainment, creation tools and distribution closer together. The partnership announced with Disney in 2024, accompanied by an equity investment, envisions a gaming and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. Bringing it to fruition represents a major undertaking for the company.
Its growth also depends on its ability to retain creators and generate returns on its investments. The legal proceedings brought against Apple and Google illustrate its battle to change mobile distribution and payment rules. The challenge now is to turn this push for greater openness into lasting business opportunities, without relying solely on Fortnite’s success.
