Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc., generally known as Esri, is an American software company specializing in geographic information systems (GIS). Based in Redlands, California, the company develops tools that link data to its spatial location. Its solutions are used, among other things, to plan infrastructure, manage networks, monitor environmental phenomena and organize public services.
From environmental studies to software development
Esri was founded in 1969 by Jack and Laura Dangermond. In its early days, the company provided consulting and analytical services for land-use planning and the environment. These origins explain the central role geography still plays in its approach: understanding the relationships between a place, its characteristics and the activities that take place there.
The launch of ARC/INFO in 1982 marked an important milestone in its development as a software company. The software combined mapping and data management at a time when these processes still required specialized skills and equipment. What next?

These approaches can help assess climate risks, simulate land-use developments or improve infrastructure monitoring. Their usefulness, however, depends on data quality, how up to date the data is and proficiency in analytical methods.
