An American software company with Austrian roots, Dynatrace develops an observability and application security platform for complex IT environments. Its software gathers and analyzes technical data to help businesses maintain their digital services, diagnose incidents and automate certain operations.

Dynatrace, Inc. operates in the enterprise software market, at the intersection of IT monitoring, data analytics and application security. Based in the United States, the company supports organizations whose digital services rely on hybrid infrastructure, cloud platforms and distributed applications. Its proposition: to make these environments easier to understand by connecting technical signals to their impact on users and business operations.

From Austrian roots to the American stock market

Founded in 2005 in Linz, Austria, Dynatrace initially specialized in application performance management, or APM. This discipline involves understanding how software operates in production and identifying the causes of slowdowns. The company joined Compuware in 2011 before continuing its development under Thoma Bravo’s ownership following the acquisition of Compuware in 2014. Its listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2019, under the ticker symbol DT, marked a new milestone. Along the way, its scope expanded from application performance to observability across the entire IT system.

A platform for connecting technical data

Dynatrace collects metrics, event logs and execution traces, among other data. This data makes it possible to monitor infrastructure, applications and users’ digital experience. Above all, the software company seeks to put this data in context: a visible degradation on an e-commerce site can thus be linked to a problem in a software service or database. Its OneAgent agent automates part of the instrumentation process, while its Smartscape technology maps dependencies between components.

The platform also relies on Grail, its data storage and analytics architecture, and on Davis artificial intelligence capabilities to facilitate investigation and the identification of incident causes. It incorporates application security features, notably to detect and prioritize vulnerabilities within their runtime context. These tools are designed for development, operations, reliability and security teams. The business model is based primarily on software subscriptions, with pricing tied to the capabilities and volumes consumed.

What next?

The growth of distributed architectures and applications incorporating AI is increasing the need to understand ever more complex chains of technical components. For Dynatrace, the challenge will be to turn this abundance of data into actionable diagnoses and controlled automation, while helping its customers manage their observability spending. Competition remains intense, particularly from Datadog, New Relic and tools offered by cloud providers. Support for open standards, including OpenTelemetry, is also an area to watch. Its ability to demonstrate tangible operational gains without adding integration complexity or costs will influence businesses’ choices.
