Duolingo is an American educational software company known for its language-learning app and its mascot, a green owl. Available on mobile devices and at duolingo.com, its service organizes practice into short exercises, with structured progression and mechanisms designed to encourage consistency. Its business model relies on a free offering funded in part by advertising, supplemented by paid subscriptions.

From academic research to the stock market

Duolingo was founded in 2011 by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker, both from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The former is particularly known for his work on CAPTCHAs and for co-founding reCAPTCHA, which was acquired by Google. The service opened to the public in 2012 with the ambition of making language learning accessible to as many people as possible.

The initial project explored a model combining language exercises with collaborative content translation. The company then refocused on learning and developed its monetization around advertising and subscriptions. Its listing on Nasdaq in 2021 under the ticker symbol DUOL marked a new stage in the development of the company, which has remained based in Pittsburgh.

An app, subscriptions and an English test

The core offering combines reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary, translation and pronunciation exercises. Streaks of consecutive days, leaderboards and virtual rewards aim to establish a daily habit. This game-based approach draws on usage analysis and regular experimentation with both content and the interface.

Subscriptions, including Super Duolingo, provide an ad-free experience and additional features, among other benefits. With Duolingo Max, launched in 2023, the company adds features based on generative artificial intelligence, designed in particular to enrich conversational practice. Their availability depends on languages, markets and devices.

Duolingo also sells the Duolingo English Test, a remotely administered English exam accepted by many higher education institutions. This activity serves a purpose distinct from that of the app: certifying language proficiency as part of an admissions process. In parallel, the company has expanded into mathematics and music, applying the same principles of short lessons and guided progression.

What next?

The next step is to turn regular practice into lasting learning outcomes while growing paid revenue without compromising free access. AI opens up opportunities for more varied dialogue and personalization, but also requires oversight of response quality, technical costs and data protection.

Diversification raises another question: can the mechanisms that encourage consistent language study effectively support learning in other subjects? For Duolingo, the challenge will be to demonstrate the educational value of these extensions in the face of specialized apps, traditional courses and general-purpose conversational assistants.
