Commvault Systems, Inc. is an American software company specializing in data protection and recovery, headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. With an online presence at commvault.com, the company serves organizations that need to safeguard their information and keep operating despite IT incidents. It works across environments that combine data centers, SaaS applications and public cloud services.

From Bell Labs to an independent software company

Commvault’s origins date back to a project developed within Bell Labs starting in 1988. The business became an independent company in 1996, then went public on Nasdaq in 2006. Its growth has tracked rising data volumes and the diversification of IT systems: physical servers, virtualization, followed by hybrid infrastructure and hosted applications.

Historically associated with enterprise backup, the software company has gradually expanded its scope to include copy management, recovery automation and protection against cyberattacks. It also developed a SaaS backup offering, initially marketed under the Metallic brand, before bringing more of its services together under the Commvault Cloud banner.

From backup to cyber resilience

The core offering consists of creating usable copies of data and enabling their recovery when needed. Commvault covers databases, virtual machines, files and certain SaaS applications, among other workloads. Its tools enable users to define retention policies, manage backup operations and organize recovery from a centralized console. Depending on their needs, customers can run its software on their own infrastructure or use cloud-managed services.

The rise of ransomware makes the reliability of copies and their separation from production environments particularly important. Commvault offers immutable storage, anomaly detection and recovery readiness features. The goal is no longer simply to retain data, but to have usable recovery points and tested procedures in place. These measures complement cybersecurity tools without replacing them.

In 2024, the acquisitions of Appranix and Clumio strengthened this direction. The former brings capabilities for rebuilding cloud environments; the latter expands data protection in the public cloud, particularly on Amazon Web Services.

What comes next?

For Commvault, the challenge is to bring data protection and operational continuity closer together. Restoring files is not always enough: an application also depends on configurations, services and connections that must be restored in the right order. The ability to automate and test this recovery is therefore a concrete area for development. In a competitive market, the software company will also need to meet expectations for cost control, ease of operation and choice of data location. Its trajectory will depend on its ability to make these protections consistent across legacy systems and cloud environments.
