CData Software, Inc. plays a discreet but foundational role in the data ecosystem: that of a connectivity provider. Based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the American company develops components and platforms that connect databases, business management applications and cloud services. Its challenge is to make this information accessible to the tools that use it, despite the diversity of formats, protocols and interfaces.
A specialization built around data access
Founded in 2014 and led by its co-founder Amit Sharma, CData has grown around software drivers that allow users to query a variety of sources through standardized interfaces. This approach addresses a recurring problem in information systems: each application has its own access methods, which developers must integrate and then maintain as technologies evolve.
In 2024, CData announced an investment from Warburg Pincus and Accel-KKR to support its growth. That same year, the acquisition of Data Virtuality, a German data virtualization specialist, expanded its scope beyond connectors. It strengthened the company’s ability to offer a unified access layer for information distributed across multiple systems.
From connectors to integration flows
CData’s catalog includes drivers using standards such as ODBC, JDBC and ADO.NET, as well as connectors for Python environments and business intelligence tools. Depending on the products and sources involved, they enable access to data from applications such as Salesforce, SAP systems or platforms such as Snowflake. The aim is to reduce the custom work needed to connect these environments to analytics software or internal applications.
CData Sync addresses another need: replicating data to databases and data warehouses used for analytics. Rather than querying only the original systems, businesses can thus populate a separate environment. CData Arc, meanwhile, focuses on exchanges between businesses, with B2B integration, EDI and file transfer capabilities.
Virtualization complements this offering by providing a way to query multiple sources through a common layer, without requiring them to be consolidated in a single storage location beforehand. These approaches address different requirements in terms of data freshness, performance, security and organization. CData also sells its technologies to software vendors that want to embed connectivity directly into their own products.
What comes next?
The proliferation of cloud services and artificial intelligence use cases is increasing the need to access dispersed data. For CData, the prospect is to extend its role as a technical intermediary between these sources and the applications that consume them. The value of this layer, however, depends on concrete conditions: connector quality, keeping pace with API changes, respecting access permissions and managing performance. In a market where major platforms also offer their own integrations, coverage of heterogeneous systems remains a point of differentiation.
