Appian Corporation is an American software company headquartered in McLean, Virginia. Available at appian.com, its offering is aimed at businesses and government agencies seeking to modernize their operations without completely rebuilding their information systems. Its platform is used to develop business applications and coordinate human involvement, existing software and automation tools within a single process.

From business processes to low-code development

Appian was founded in 1999 by Matt Calkins, Michael Beckley and others. The company grew around business process management, or BPM: an approach that involves modeling the stages of an activity, organizing their execution and tracking their results. This foundation remains central to its positioning, even as its technological scope expands.

With the rise of low-code, Appian has placed greater emphasis on visual application development. The aim is to reduce the amount of code needed to create interfaces, define rules and connect systems. Listed on Nasdaq in 2017 under the ticker symbol APPN, the company subsequently expanded its offering in robotic process automation and operational workflow analysis. The acquisition of Lana Labs in 2021 notably strengthened its process mining capabilities.

A platform connecting applications, data and decisions

The Appian platform combines several complementary functions. Low-code enables application development; orchestration organizes task sequences; robotic process automation handles certain repetitive interactions with software. Process mining uses the traces left in systems to reconstruct actual processes and identify bottlenecks or deviations.

A layer known as a data fabric facilitates access to data scattered across different sources so it can be used in applications and workflows. Appian also offers artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly for processing documents and assisting with certain stages of work. Their value, however, depends on data quality, the controls in place and their integration into users’ working practices.

These tools have applications in financial services, insurance, the public sector and industry. They can be used for case processing, compliance, procurement or request management. Appian primarily sells software subscriptions, supplemented by services, and also relies on systems integration partners.

What next?

For Appian, the challenge is to turn interest in artificial intelligence into measurable operational improvements. Its positioning is based on integrating these capabilities into controlled processes, with rules, access rights and human oversight. Against Microsoft, ServiceNow or Pegasystems, differentiation depends notably on the ability to manage complex processes. The ability to limit integration costs, simplify application maintenance and demonstrate the gains achieved will remain crucial to winning organizations over.
