Zalando SE holds a prominent position in European fashion e-commerce. Based in Berlin, the company operates zalando.com and apps that allow consumers to buy clothing, shoes, accessories and beauty products. Behind this storefront, it is developing an infrastructure that combines software, data and logistics. Its distinctive feature is a hybrid model: Zalando sells products purchased from suppliers while also hosting brands and retailers that sell their own stock on its platform.

From shoes to a broader fashion offering

The company was founded in 2008 by Robert Gentz and David Schneider. Initially focused on selling shoes online, it gradually expanded its catalogue and European presence. Easy ordering, delivery and returns became core elements of its commercial proposition, in a sector where the inability to try items on remains a barrier to online shopping.

Its listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2014 marked a milestone in its development. Zalando then built an organization capable of serving multiple markets, with offerings and customer journeys tailored to local habits. This expansion was accompanied by investment in warehouses, IT tools and relationships with brands, going beyond its role as a retailer.

A commercial platform and business services

Its consumer-facing business relies on a multibrand offering, personalized recommendations and services that make it easier to find products. Zalando complements its main website with Lounge by Zalando, dedicated to limited-time sales at discounted prices. Revenue comes notably from merchandise sales, partner commissions and services offered to brands.

The group is also developing a business-to-business operation. Under the ZEOS brand, it offers logistics services that enable fashion businesses to manage orders from different sales channels. Its offering also includes software solutions and marketing services. The aim is to monetize capabilities initially built for its own operations by making them available to third parties.

Technology is used in demand forecasting, inventory management, recommendations and size selection assistance. These applications address concrete business challenges: improving product discovery, limiting stockouts and reducing avoidable returns. Their effectiveness nevertheless depends on data quality and compliance with personal data protection rules.

What next?

Zalando is seeking to combine audience growth with the expansion of its business services. This trajectory exposes it to competition on multiple fronts, from generalist platforms and fashion specialists to brands’ own websites. Controlling logistics costs, retaining customers and maintaining the quality of its offering remain crucial. The group must also meet European requirements applicable to large platforms while making its environmental commitments clearer. Its future will depend as much on the profitability of its infrastructure as on the experience it offers shoppers.
