Yugabyte, Inc. is an American company in the data sector, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Its core product, YugabyteDB, belongs to the distributed SQL database family: it combines the relational model with an architecture capable of spreading data and processing across multiple servers. The aim is to meet the needs of transactional applications for which a service interruption or a capacity limit can have significant operational consequences.

Origins rooted in distributed systems

Founded in 2016 by Kannan Muthukkaruppan, Karthik Ranganathan and Mikhail Bautin, Yugabyte draws on its founders’ experience in large-scale data infrastructure, notably at Facebook. Their project seeks to bring together two worlds that have long been approached separately: the transactional guarantees of relational databases and the deployment flexibility of distributed systems.

The company chose an open-source approach for the core of YugabyteDB, released under the Apache 2.0 license. This choice allows developers to examine the code and deploy the database without relying exclusively on a hosted service. Its business model is based in particular on commercial management, operations and support offerings, as well as a version delivered as a cloud service.

Distributing data without giving up SQL

YugabyteDB supports ACID transactions, which govern the reliability of data operations. Its architecture partitions data into shards and replicates them across multiple nodes, with consensus mechanisms designed to maintain consistency. Depending on the configuration chosen, deployments can span multiple availability zones or geographic regions. This distribution aims to improve resilience and accommodate growth in data volumes or traffic.

PostgreSQL compatibility is central to its positioning. It allows some of the skills, tools and applications from that ecosystem to be reused. However, it does not mean that every migration can take place without adjustments: extensions, queries and performance must be checked in a distributed context. The YugabyteDB Voyager tool supports these projects by facilitating analysis and transfer from existing databases.

Yugabyte primarily targets organizations modernizing their transactional applications or seeking to reduce their dependence on a single infrastructure. The database can run in different cloud environments or on private infrastructure. In return, a distributed architecture requires trade-offs involving latency, data location, costs and operational complexity.

What’s next?

For Yugabyte, the challenge is to turn interest in PostgreSQL and the cloud into lasting migrations to distributed SQL. Its progress will depend on its ability to simplify operations, deepen compatibility and demonstrate gains on real-world workloads. When competing with services from major cloud providers and other distributed databases, ease of migration and control over total cost will be decisive criteria.
