XPeng Inc. is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Guangzhou, in Guangdong province. Led by He Xiaopeng, the company combines automotive design, software development and electronic systems integration. Its positioning rests on a conviction: cars also stand apart through their computing architecture, interfaces and assistance features. Its corporate and commercial website is available at xpeng.com.

A company born in China’s digital ecosystem

Founded in 2014, XPeng belongs to the generation of Chinese automakers that emerged with the rise of connected electric cars. He Xiaopeng, who comes from the internet industry and co-founded the UCWeb browser, became its leading figure. The company gradually built up its industrial capabilities while developing a substantial share of its onboard technologies in-house.

Its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 2020, followed by its Hong Kong listing in 2021, accompanied this growth. However, XPeng operates in a fiercely competitive domestic market, where model ranges are updated rapidly and price cuts are frequent. This pressure requires it to balance research spending, cost control and increasing volumes.

Electric vehicles and a technology platform

The range includes sedans and SUVs, with models such as the P7, G6 and G9. Specifications and versions available for sale vary by country. In several vehicles, XPeng uses a high-voltage electrical architecture to enable fast charging, provided a compatible charging station and suitable conditions are available.

The automaker also develops cockpit interfaces, over-the-air software updates and advanced driver assistance systems. In China, some features are grouped under the XNGP name. Their availability depends on the vehicle, the market and the regulatory framework. These are driver assistance systems: they do not relieve the driver of the responsibility to supervise the vehicle.

This software expertise also supports industrial partnerships. In 2023, Volkswagen announced an equity investment in XPeng and a partnership to develop electric vehicles for China. The collaboration was subsequently expanded to include electronic and electrical architecture, illustrating the strategic value of the automaker’s technologies beyond its own brand.

What comes next?

XPeng continues to expand outside China, particularly in Europe, where the brand began selling vehicles in France in 2024. The challenge goes beyond exporting vehicles: it needs to establish a distribution network, provide maintenance and spare parts, and build long-term trust.

What comes next will depend on its ability to adapt its software to local regulations and maintain its competitiveness despite trade barriers. For XPeng, turning technological investment into lasting profitability remains an objective that shapes its strategy as much as expanding its model range.
