Verkada Inc. is an American physical security company headquartered in San Mateo, California. Positioned at the intersection of hardware and software, it develops connected equipment for businesses, schools, retailers and public organizations. Its goal: to bring building protection systems traditionally managed separately together in a single interface.

A company born from bringing hardware and the cloud together

Founded in 2016 by Filip Kaliszan, Hans Robertson and others, Verkada initially grew around video surveillance. It chose an architecture combining cameras with local storage and processing capabilities with a cloud-based administration platform. This approach aims to reduce reliance on traditional video recorders and simplify the management of geographically dispersed sites.

The company subsequently expanded its catalog to cover several aspects of building security. It remains a privately held company, funded in part by venture capital investors. Its growth relies on a commercial strategy combining equipment sales, software licenses and a partner network.

Equipment connected to a shared platform

At the heart of the offering is Command, Verkada’s web platform. It allows authorized teams to view footage, administer devices and manage access permissions through a centralized interface. Cameras are a major component of the catalog, complemented by access control, alarms, intercoms, environmental sensors and visitor management tools.

The operational benefit lies in bringing these functions together: an event involving a door, for example, can be reviewed alongside footage from the corresponding camera. Video search and automated analysis tools are also intended to help operators find relevant footage without manually reviewing all recordings.

For customers, this integration can simplify deployment and operation, but it also creates dependence on a single supplier. Costs must therefore be assessed over time, taking into account subscriptions, data retention terms, integration options and hardware replacement.

What comes next?

Verkada’s trajectory will depend on its ability to expand this platform without undermining its customers’ trust. In March 2021, a breach that enabled unauthorized access to customer cameras illustrated the risks associated with administrative privileges and centralized access.

For French and European organizations, evaluating the offering must focus in particular on the GDPR, data transfers, the traceability of access to data and the proportionality of surveillance. The expansion of artificial intelligence capabilities heightens these requirements. Beyond adding new equipment, access management, transparency in data processing and interoperability will be decisive criteria for establishing Verkada as a lasting part of security infrastructure.
