United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) is a Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Hsinchu. The company operates as a foundry: it produces integrated circuits designed by its customers in its factories. Less prominent in the media than companies making artificial intelligence chips, it holds an important position in the global electronics supply chain, where many components rely on proven processes rather than the smallest process nodes.

A company born in Taiwan’s technology cradle

Established in 1980 out of work carried out by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), UMC belongs to the first generation of companies that shaped Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. Initially involved in both circuit design and manufacturing, it shifted during the 1990s toward foundry services for third parties. This transition accompanied the rise of the “fabless” model, in which chip designers entrust production to specialized manufacturers.

Listed in Taiwan and New York, UMC has gradually expanded its manufacturing footprint. In addition to its Taiwanese facilities, it has production capacity in Singapore, mainland China and Japan. Its Japanese presence was notably strengthened by the full acquisition in 2019 of a manufacturing business originating from Fujitsu, which became United Semiconductor Japan.

Specialized processes for diverse markets

UMC turns its customers’ designs into circuits etched onto silicon wafers. Its offering combines manufacturing capacity, design support tools and processes tailored to different uses. It notably covers logic technologies, mixed-signal circuits, radio frequency and power management. Its 28- and 22-nanometer platforms illustrate a positioning in which cost control, power consumption and reliability matter as much as miniaturization.

The chips it produces can be used in connected devices, networking equipment, industrial systems or vehicles. For these applications, a so-called mature process is not necessarily outdated: it can offer a suitable balance between performance, price and length of availability. In automotive and industrial applications, component qualification and production stability are therefore decisive criteria.

The business model nevertheless remains demanding. Factories require substantial investment, while their profitability depends on equipment utilization rates. UMC is therefore sensitive to its customers’ inventory cycles, changes in electronics demand and competition among foundries.

What’s next?

UMC’s path forward involves broadening its technologies and adapting its manufacturing footprint. In 2024, the company announced with Intel the development of a 12-nanometer manufacturing platform, with production then expected to begin in 2027 in the United States. This partnership is intended to expand its offering without following the race toward the most advanced nodes.

Geographic diversification is also an important issue in a sector affected by trade tensions and concerns over supply security. For UMC, the challenge will be to meet these expectations while maintaining investment discipline in cyclical markets.
