Ubiquiti Inc. is an American telecommunications company headquartered in New York. With an online presence at ui.com, it develops connectivity equipment and the tools needed to manage it. Its portfolio covers both business local area networks and the infrastructure used by operators providing wireless Internet access. The company serves, among others, small and medium-sized businesses, retailers, educational institutions, systems integrators and users seeking an advanced home network.

A company rooted in wireless broadband

Ubiquiti was founded in 2005 by Robert Pera, an engineer who previously worked at Apple. Initially known as Ubiquiti Networks, it grew around radio equipment designed to deploy high-speed connections. These products address the needs of local Internet service providers in particular, for whom wireless links offer an alternative to laying cables over certain distances or in areas that are difficult to serve.

Having gone public in 2011, the company gradually expanded its scope. With UniFi, it moved into local area networks and built a product range combining Wi-Fi access points, switches and security gateways. Its growth is based on product and software design, manufacturing outsourced to industrial partners and distribution through a combination of resellers and online stores. A community of users and installers also contributes to technical discussions about its solutions.

Two areas: business networks and service provider infrastructure

UniFi brings together the main offerings for local area networks. Equipment is managed through a common interface, with configuration, monitoring and access management features. The aim is to reduce the number of tools needed for day-to-day network operation. Depending on the chosen architecture, management applications can be hosted on a dedicated console or in a cloud environment.

Beyond connectivity, Ubiquiti offers cameras and video surveillance solutions through UniFi Protect, as well as access control devices. This expansion allows systems integrators to combine several technical functions within a single management environment. It also makes the choice of ecosystem more important for customers, particularly when they are considering upgrading their installation.

The UISP ecosystem is geared more toward Internet service providers and network operators. It includes management tools and equipment for connecting sites or delivering a connection to subscribers. The airMAX and airFiber product families illustrate this longstanding activity in radio transmission, which complements the Wi-Fi networks used inside buildings.

What next?

Ubiquiti’s trajectory will depend in particular on its ability to support Wi-Fi network upgrades, increasing data rates and the convergence of connectivity and physical security. Its expanding catalog makes software consistency, ongoing equipment support and the quality of customer support essential. In a competitive market, cybersecurity, product availability and control over the total cost of installations will remain decisive criteria for its business customers.
