Founded in 2010, Tipalti is an American fintech company that develops software for managing supplier invoices and payments. It supports businesses dealing with growing numbers of payees, currencies and international transactions.

Tipalti, Inc. operates in a less visible segment of fintech than consumer payments: corporate financial operations. Based in California, the company markets a cloud platform designed to automate supplier invoice processing, payee information collection and payment execution. Its offering is aimed particularly at growing organizations whose finance teams need to handle more transactions without multiplying manual tasks. The software thus becomes a coordination hub for procurement, accounting and payments.

A company born out of the challenges of international payments

Tipalti was founded in 2010 by Chen Amit and Oren Zeev, two entrepreneurs of Israeli origin. Its development rests on an observation: paying numerous partners, sometimes spread across several countries, involves much more than a simple bank transfer. It requires collecting their details, verifying data, managing documentation requirements and reconciling payments with accounting entries.

The company first made its name in mass payments, particularly among digital businesses paying affiliates, creators or business partners. It then expanded into accounts payable management. The acquisition of Approve, announced in 2021, strengthened its presence in procurement and expense approval processes, upstream of payment.

Connecting invoices, controls and payments

The platform organizes several steps usually scattered across emails, spreadsheets and accounting tools. Suppliers can enter their information through a portal, while finance teams centralize invoices and define approval workflows. The aim is to reduce repeated data entry, clarify responsibilities and keep a record of decisions.

Tipalti also supports international payments through various methods and in different currencies. Its features include tax document collection, payee checks and payment reconciliation. These mechanisms help provide oversight of operations without relieving businesses of their own compliance obligations. Integrations with accounting software and enterprise resource planning systems enable financial data synchronization.

The model combines software sales with payment-related services. Its value depends particularly on transaction volumes, the geographical spread of payees and the complexity of internal procedures. For a finance department, the challenge is as much about controlling processing costs as it is about ensuring reliable information and facilitating accounting closes.

What comes next?

The next stage hinges on the ability to offer a coherent workflow, from purchase request to payment, in competition with accounting automation specialists and spend management platforms. Artificial intelligence offers opportunities to improve data extraction and anomaly detection, but the quality of controls will remain decisive. For Tipalti, the challenge will be to combine automation, integration with existing systems and adaptation to local rules without adding another layer of complexity for finance teams.
