Telesat Corporation has a long-standing presence in Canadian telecommunications. Based in Ottawa, the company operates geostationary satellites and sells transmission capacity to telecom operators, broadcasters, businesses and public-sector organizations. A history tied to connecting Canada

Founded in 1969, Telesat initially addressed a national challenge: ensuring communications across a vast territory that includes many communities far from major urban centers. The launch of Anik A1 in 1972 marked an important milestone in television broadcasting and satellite communications in Canada. This commitment to territorial coverage remains a guiding thread throughout its operations.

Initially established with public-sector ownership, the company later moved into the private sector. In 2007, its acquisition by Loral and Canada’s Public Sector Pension Investment Board was accompanied by a merger with Loral’s satellite operations, expanding its international reach. A further reorganization led to the listing of Telesat Corporation on Nasdaq and the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2021.

Two architectures for satellite communications

The company’s legacy business relies on geostationary satellites: positioned at an altitude of approximately 36,000 kilometers, they appear stationary from the ground and cover vast areas. This architecture is particularly well suited to broadcast distribution and data links. Telesat also provides connectivity services for corporate networks, government communications and remote sites. It primarily serves business and institutional customers rather than providing internet access directly to individuals.

The Telesat Lightspeed program is the main driver of its transformation. This low Earth orbit constellation aims to deliver high-speed communications with lower latency than geostationary satellites. Its target markets include telecom operators, maritime and aviation applications, and government bodies. MDA Space was selected in 2023 to build the satellites. The system is intended to combine a space segment, ground stations and user terminals, with capacity management tailored to the requirements of professional networks.

What comes next?

Telesat’s trajectory depends largely on the execution of Lightspeed, which is supported by the Canadian and Quebec authorities. The challenge goes beyond manufacturing satellites: it requires coordinating launches, deploying ground infrastructure, obtaining the necessary approvals and turning commercial commitments into sustainable revenue. In competing with other constellations, the company is banking on its experience with institutional customers and operators. At the same time, it must manage the evolution of its geostationary business, which is exposed to changes in media consumption. Its ability to integrate these two models will be decisive in shaping its future position in space-based telecommunications.
