Tech Mahindra Limited is an Indian IT services and consulting company headquartered in Pune. A member of the Mahindra Group, which also operates in the automotive and agricultural equipment industries, it works with large organizations to modernize their applications, infrastructure and processes. Classified in the software sector, it primarily follows the IT services business model: its activities focus on IT transformation and operations services rather than selling a single software product.

A history closely tied to telecommunications

The company was founded in 1986 as Mahindra British Telecom, a joint venture between Mahindra and British telecommunications operator British Telecom. These origins have had a lasting influence on its expertise in operators’ information systems, network management and related services. It adopted the name Tech Mahindra in 2006, the year it went public in India.

A turning point came in 2009 with the acquisition of a controlling stake in Satyam Computer Services, following the disclosure of major accounting fraud at the Indian company. The merger with Mahindra Satyam, completed in 2013, expanded Tech Mahindra’s scope beyond its telecoms base. In particular, it strengthened its presence in IT services for manufacturing and other economic sectors.

From software development to systems operations

Tech Mahindra covers several stages of the IT lifecycle: consulting, application design, integration, maintenance and infrastructure management. Its teams work on cloud migration, data analytics, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The company also provides business process outsourcing services, as well as engineering services for connected products and systems.

Telecommunications remains an area of specialization, with work on networks, billing tools and customer relationship platforms. Its client portfolio also includes companies in manufacturing, banking, insurance, retail and healthcare. Like other Indian IT service providers, Tech Mahindra combines teams located close to clients with delivery centers spread across several countries. This model brings together industry knowledge, development capacity and operational continuity.

What next?

For Tech Mahindra, generative artificial intelligence represents both a market for services and a force transforming its own delivery methods. Automating coding, testing or support can improve efficiency, but also prompts clients to reconsider their expectations and budgets. The challenge is therefore to turn these technologies into useful, secure and economically viable projects.

Modernizing existing systems, cloud computing and cybersecurity offer further opportunities. In a competitive market, the company’s trajectory will depend in particular on its ability to capitalize on its industry expertise, train its teams and maintain the quality of execution on complex contracts.
