SoundHound AI, Inc. is an American company specializing in voice artificial intelligence, headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Its ambition: to enable users to interact naturally with devices and digital services. With a presence at soundhound.com, it primarily markets its technologies to businesses seeking to integrate a conversational interface into their own products, under their own brand.

From music recognition to conversational AI

Founded in 2005 by Keyvan Mohajer and others, SoundHound became known for music search and identification, including from a sung or hummed tune. This consumer-facing activity went hand in hand with the development of a technological foundation dedicated to sound processing, speech recognition and language understanding.

In 2015, the company launched Houndify, a platform that allows developers to integrate its voice capabilities into applications and devices. This broadened its positioning beyond music. SoundHound AI went public on Nasdaq in 2022 under the ticker symbol SOUN, following a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC.

Assistants for vehicles, restaurants and businesses

Its core offering combines speech recognition and intent understanding to turn a spoken request into a response or an action. SoundHound advocates an approach that brings these processes closer together, rather than treating them as entirely separate steps. Its solutions can also combine information from specialized domains with generative AI capabilities, depending on the intended use cases.

In the automotive industry, its technologies power voice services offered by Hyundai and Stellantis, among others. They are used to interact with vehicle functions or access information. For manufacturers, another benefit is retaining control over the experience offered to drivers, without relying exclusively on assistants from major digital platforms.

Restaurants are another important focus, with automated order-taking tools, particularly over the phone or at the drive-through. The acquisition of SYNQ3 in 2024 strengthened this business. The acquisition of Amelia, also completed in 2024, expanded its scope to enterprise conversational agents and the automation of requests directed to customer service departments or internal teams.

What next?

SoundHound must turn this broader portfolio into lasting deployments. Integrating acquisitions, controlling costs and ensuring reliable responses are central challenges. Whether in a car or when placing an order, an assistant must handle accents, background noise and unexpected phrasing while keeping errors to a minimum.

Competing with major cloud providers and conversational AI specialists, the company is banking on its voice expertise and offerings tailored to specific industries. Its trajectory will depend in particular on its ability to demonstrate measurable operational gains, protect the data exchanged and turn experiments into recurring use.
