Sonos, Inc. is an American hardware company specializing in connected home audio. Based in Santa Barbara, California, it combines speakers, soundbars and audio components with a software layer that enables users to control music across multiple rooms. Its positioning is built on an integrated experience: guided setup, device synchronization and access to numerous streaming services. Its official website, sonos.com, showcases its products and also serves as a direct sales channel.

From multiroom audio to a consumer brand

Founded in 2002 by John MacFarlane, Tom Cullen, Trung Mai and Craig Shelburne, Sonos grew around an idea that was uncommon at the time: making whole-home music playback accessible without a complex audiovisual installation. Its first systems, launched in the mid-2000s, combined network players with a dedicated controller. The smartphone subsequently became the central interface for this use.

The company gradually expanded its product range, moving from components that connect to a hi-fi system to standalone speakers and then home theater. Its listing on Nasdaq in 2018, under the ticker symbol SONO, marked a new stage in its development. This trajectory placed it at the intersection of two businesses: manufacturing consumer electronics and developing a platform whose value depends on compatibility across generations of devices.

An ecosystem spanning music, television and mobility

The product range includes speakers in the Era series, the portable Move and Roam models, Beam and Arc soundbars, and subwoofers. Equipment such as Port and Amp allows existing installations or passive speakers to be integrated into the Sonos environment. The Ace headphones, launched in 2024, opened up another area, personal listening, with features related to television audio.

Beyond the hardware, the app handles setup, room grouping and access to content. Depending on the model, products support different connections and features, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirPlay 2. Sonos also offers its own radio service. Its business model remains primarily based on equipment sales, both directly and through resellers, with an approach centered on gradually expanding the system installed in the customer’s home.

What comes next?

The app redesign in 2024 highlighted the hardware’s dependence on its software. Missing features and usability problems drew criticism, prompting Sonos to undertake corrective work and efforts to restore trust. For equipment intended to remain in a home for several years, service continuity is as tangible a concern as acoustic quality.

What comes next will depend in particular on its ability to diversify use cases without complicating the experience. Facing competition from traditional audio companies and major technology platforms, Sonos will need to maintain interoperability, provide long-term support for its devices and demonstrate the value of its ecosystem beyond each new product.
