Snap Inc. is an American software and digital services company based in Santa Monica, California. Known for Snapchat, it builds its offering around the smartphone camera, messaging and visual content. It serves users, creators and advertisers alike. Its corporate website, snap.com, presents its products, technologies and company information.

From Snapchat to Snap Inc.

The story begins in 2011 with an ephemeral photo-sharing app developed by a team led by Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, who were then students at Stanford. Snapchat stands out through an approach that differs from social networks built around a public profile: direct exchanges and their scheduled disappearance take center stage. However, this disappearance does not guarantee that a recipient cannot keep a copy.

The service gradually expands its uses with Stories, followed by augmented reality filters and effects. In 2016, Snapchat Inc. becomes Snap Inc., a name change reflecting the broadening of its ambitions beyond the app. The company goes public in New York in March 2017 under the ticker symbol SNAP.

A visual platform funded by advertising

Snapchat brings together several features: private messaging, Stories, content discovery, short videos with Spotlight and social mapping with Snap Map. Bitmoji avatars round out this ecosystem. The platform thus combines communication among friends and family with content consumption, with a particularly strong presence among younger audiences.

Advertising is its main source of revenue. Snap sells video ad formats, ad placements within content and interactive experiences, including sponsored Lenses. These effects can alter a face, animate an environment or visualize certain products. Lens Studio gives developers, creators and brands the tools to design these experiences.

The company also develops Snapchat+, a subscription offering access to additional features. It has integrated the conversational assistant My AI and continues its hardware development work with Spectacles glasses. The generation introduced in 2024 targets augmented reality developers rather than an immediate rollout to the general public.

What next?

Snap must strengthen its advertising business in a market contested by Meta, TikTok and YouTube. Its ability to improve campaign measurement, retain advertisers and grow subscriptions will influence its financial stability. Protecting minors, moderation and the governance of personal data also remain key challenges.

Augmented reality offers an opportunity for differentiation, but its adoption beyond the smartphone still depends on device comfort, battery life and practical uses. For Snap, the challenge will be to turn its technology investments into regularly used services and sustainable revenue, without undermining the communication experience that made Snapchat known.
