Smartsheet Inc. is a US provider of collaborative work management software based in Bellevue, Washington. Available at smartsheet.com, its platform uses the familiar visual layout of a spreadsheet to organize tasks, structure data and manage projects. It is aimed particularly at organizations looking to move beyond exchanging files and emails without developing a dedicated application for every business process.

From collaborative spreadsheet to enterprise software

Founded in 2005, Smartsheet was built around a simple idea: retain the flexibility of a spreadsheet while adding collaboration and tracking features. Its offering gradually expanded to support cross-functional projects, portfolios of activities and recurring processes. This evolution broadened its positioning, from tracking teams’ day-to-day operations to coordinating programs across an entire organization.

Listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2018, the company later underwent a change in ownership. Announced in 2024, its acquisition by investment firms Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners was completed in January 2025, resulting in its delisting.

A platform for structuring and automating work

Sold on a subscription basis, Smartsheet combines shared sheets, data collection forms, dashboards and planning views, including Gantt charts. Users can assign responsibilities, set deadlines, track dependencies and configure alerts or approval workflows. The aim is to make project progress visible without increasing the number of manual status reports.

The platform serves a range of functions: IT, marketing and operations teams, as well as project management offices. Its no-code approach enables business users to build certain workflows, while its administration and access management features meet organizations’ oversight needs. Integrations with tools such as Microsoft Teams, Slack and Salesforce make it easier to incorporate into existing software environments.

Smartsheet has also expanded its scope to include resource planning and digital content management. Its acquisition of Brandfolder in 2020 strengthened the latter area, adding features designed to centralize, organize and distribute assets used particularly by marketing teams.

What’s next?

The next challenge is to simplify the coordination of complex processes without making the user experience more cumbersome. Artificial intelligence opens up opportunities to generate formulas, summarize information and facilitate data analysis, but its value will depend on the reliability of the results and the control retained by teams.

Competing with Microsoft, Asana, monday.com and Airtable, Smartsheet will also need to demonstrate the value of a specialized platform to organizations mindful of their subscription costs. Its growth will depend in particular on integration with information systems, governance and the ability to turn fragmented usage into sustainable processes.
