SK Telecom Co., Ltd. is a telecommunications operator based in Seoul, South Korea. A member of the SK group, the company provides mobile services to consumers and businesses, alongside fixed connectivity, television and digital services through its subsidiaries. In a country where connected technologies are widely used, it is a major player in digital infrastructure. Its corporate website, sktelecom.com, presents its business activities and strategic priorities.

From mobile origins to a refocused organization

The company traces its origins to Korea Mobile Telecommunications Services, established in 1984. Initially involved in the development of mobile radio communications, it later supported the spread of mobile phones in South Korea. Its acquisition in 1994 by the group that would become SK, followed by the adoption of the SK Telecom name in 1997, marked its transformation into a private operator within an industrial conglomerate.

Its history follows the major developments in mobile networks, from CDMA to 4G and then the commercial launch of 5G in 2019. In 2021, a corporate split separated the telecommunications activities, retained by SK Telecom, from some of its holdings and investments, which were grouped under SK Square. This distinction is essential to understanding its current scope: SK Square’s assets should not be treated as those of the operator.

Connectivity, services and AI infrastructure

Mobile remains the foundation of SK Telecom’s business, with offerings for both individuals and businesses. The operator maintains and upgrades its networks to meet coverage, capacity and service quality needs. Its subsidiary SK Broadband complements these activities with fixed Internet access, business connectivity solutions and Internet Protocol television, notably under the B tv brand.

Beyond subscriptions, SK Telecom develops services based on artificial intelligence. Its assistant A., also known as A dot, illustrates this ambition to offer a personalized interface for various everyday uses. The company also works on models and applications tailored to telecommunications, particularly for customer relations and internal operations. Its participation in the Global Telco AI Alliance places this initiative within a collaborative effort with other international operators.

What next?

SK Telecom’s trajectory rests on combining its traditional business with new drivers of growth in AI, including data centers and related services. The challenge will be to turn these developments into sustainable revenue without compromising the investment needed for networks. Data protection, cybersecurity and keeping energy consumption under control will also be decisive. For this operator rooted in a mature domestic market, differentiation will depend as much on infrastructure reliability as on the practical usefulness of new services.
