Semtech Corporation is an American semiconductor company whose technologies are used in the transmission, protection and processing of electronic signals. Based in California and listed on Nasdaq, it supplies components and solutions integrated into equipment made by industrial manufacturers, telecommunications companies and connected device specialists. Its positioning rests on functions that are often invisible to end users but essential to the operation of networks and devices. Its corporate website is semtech.com.

From discrete components to connectivity

Founded in 1960, Semtech initially grew its business in discrete components before extending its expertise to analog and mixed-signal circuits. Its history has been shaped by gradual diversification into communications and several acquisitions aimed at complementing its technologies.

The acquisition of the French company Cycleo in 2012 marked a pivotal milestone. Its work laid the foundations for LoRa, a radio modulation technology that enables small amounts of data to be transmitted over long distances with low power consumption. Semtech subsequently helped develop this ecosystem, particularly around the LoRaWAN network protocol, supported by the LoRa Alliance. It is important to distinguish LoRa radio technology from the protocol that organizes communications between devices on the network.

In 2023, the acquisition of Sierra Wireless expanded the group’s scope to include cellular modules and connectivity services. This transaction strengthened its ability to offer more than components by also supporting the connection and operation of devices deployed in the field.

Operations spanning infrastructure and connected devices

Semtech’s portfolio includes protection circuits designed, in particular, to limit damage caused by electrostatic discharge. It also includes signal integrity solutions for high-speed links used in communications infrastructure and data centers. These components help maintain the quality of data exchanges as data rates increase and electrical constraints become more demanding.

In the Internet of Things, LoRa supports applications such as remote metering, equipment tracking, agricultural sensors and building monitoring. This approach prioritizes battery life and range over data volumes. The cellular technologies acquired through Sierra Wireless address other coverage, mobility and data rate requirements. Semtech relies heavily on industrial partners to manufacture its components.

What next?

Semtech’s trajectory depends in particular on its ability to combine semiconductors, modules and connectivity services into coherent offerings. Growing data transmission needs in data centers and the digitalization of infrastructure create market opportunities, without eliminating the cycles inherent in the chip market. For the Internet of Things, the challenges remain practical: simplifying deployments, controlling operating costs and ensuring device security. Adoption will depend as much on these conditions as on radio performance.
