An American flash memory specialist, Sandisk Corporation supplies storage media to consumers, equipment manufacturers and businesses. Independent from Western Digital once again since 2025, the company operates in a market where manufacturing expertise matters as much as product performance.

Sandisk Corporation designs and markets storage solutions based on NAND flash memory, which retains data without electrical power. Based in California, the American company operates in the hardware sector. Its products support very different uses: recording images, expanding a computer’s capacity or storing data for business applications. Its website, sandisk.com, showcases, among other offerings, its ranges for consumers and imaging professionals.

From the origins of flash memory to renewed independence

The company was founded in 1988 under the name SunDisk by Eli Harari, Sanjay Mehrotra and Jack Thompson. It later adopted the name SanDisk and helped bring flash storage to electronic devices. Memory cards contributed to its recognition as digital photography and, later, mobile devices became more widespread. The absence of mechanical parts and the compactness of this technology gradually opened up other markets.

In 2016, Western Digital acquired SanDisk, bringing together hard drive and flash memory operations. This structure came to an end in 2025: the separation of the two businesses created a newly independent Sandisk company, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol SNDK. Western Digital retained the hard drive operations, while Sandisk focused on flash storage.

From memory cards to SSDs

Sandisk’s portfolio includes SD and microSD cards, USB flash drives, and internal and external SSDs. The SanDisk Extreme and Extreme PRO ranges are aimed particularly at users seeking transfer speeds suited to photography, video and large file transfers. The company also supplies solutions to equipment manufacturers and the data center market.

Its business goes beyond assembling storage media under a well-known brand. Memory design, controllers and embedded software jointly determine product performance, endurance and reliability. Sandisk relies on a long-standing manufacturing partnership with Kioxia for the development and production of NAND memory in Japan. This cooperation allows the companies to share some of the investment required in a particularly capital-intensive industry.

What comes next?

Sandisk’s renewed independence makes its strategy clearer, with its focus now on flash. Its prospects depend in particular on growing storage needs, both in end-user devices and in digital infrastructure. Artificial intelligence could support certain markets without eliminating the cycles of oversupply and price fluctuations that characterize the memory industry.

For Sandisk, the challenge will be to improve chip density and SSD performance while keeping costs under control. The ability to serve markets with different requirements, from removable storage to business infrastructure, will remain crucial. It will also need to maintain users’ confidence in the durability of its storage media and the quality of its software support.
