Rocket Lab Corporation is an American space company headquartered in Long Beach, California. It develops launch vehicles, builds satellites and supplies onboard equipment to commercial and institutional customers. Its business model combines two complementary activities: delivering payloads to space and designing the systems that enable them to operate there.

From New Zealand roots to the US stock market

Founded in 2006 by New Zealand engineer Peter Beck, Rocket Lab maintains a significant industrial and operational presence in New Zealand. Its Electron light launch vehicle first reached orbit in 2018 from the Māhia Peninsula. The company subsequently expanded its activities in the United States, notably by establishing launch capability at Wallops, Virginia.

Its listing on Nasdaq in 2021, under the ticker symbol RKLB, supported an expansion strategy that extends beyond launch services alone. Acquisitions in space components and equipment have gradually strengthened its industrial integration. The aim is to bring more technological building blocks in-house while also selling them to other industry players.

Launch vehicles, satellites and components

Electron serves the small satellite market. Unlike rideshare missions on a more powerful rocket, a dedicated flight allows the target orbit and schedule to be tailored more precisely to the customer’s needs. This positioning is particularly attractive to Earth observation operators, scientific missions and public agencies. Rocket Lab also offers HASTE, a suborbital vehicle derived from Electron, designed to test hypersonic technologies.

Alongside this, its space systems business covers satellite platform design, the manufacture of complete spacecraft and the supply of subsystems. Its portfolio includes solar cells, attitude control equipment and separation systems. This offering allows it to participate in missions it does not launch itself.

The Photon platform illustrates this diversification. In 2022, Rocket Lab launched NASA’s CAPSTONE mission and used a Photon-derived spacecraft to place this small probe on a trajectory toward the Moon. The company is therefore not limited to access to low Earth orbit: it is also developing transportation and support capabilities for missions farther afield.

What comes next?

The Neutron program is a key pillar of its strategy. Designed as a launch vehicle with greater capacity than Electron and a reusable first stage, it is aimed particularly at constellation deployment and institutional needs. Bringing it to fruition, however, requires navigating the demanding stages of development, qualification and routine operations.

For Rocket Lab, what comes next will depend as much on launch reliability as on the execution of satellite contracts. Ramping up industrial production, controlling costs and the ability to fund multiple programs will be decisive. Its positioning rests on this combination of access to space and the production of orbital infrastructure, in a market where government orders play an important role.
