Now active beyond stock brokerage, it is seeking to diversify its revenue streams and expand its international presence, under sustained regulatory scrutiny.

Robinhood Markets is an American digital financial services company known for its investment app for retail investors. Based in Menlo Park, California, it offers trading in stocks, exchange-traded funds, options and cryptocurrencies, depending on the market and eligibility requirements. Its positioning is built on simplified access to financial products, a mobile interface and commission-free trading on certain transactions. Its website, robinhood.com, presents offerings whose availability varies by country.

From free brokerage to a stock market listing

Founded in 2013 by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, Robinhood launched its app to the American public in 2015. The two founders, who attended Stanford, set out to lower the barriers to stock market investing. The company supported the rise of a generation of self-directed investors and helped push traditional American brokers toward eliminating commissions on stock trades.

This growth has been accompanied by controversy. In early 2021, restrictions imposed on purchases of certain stocks, including GameStop, sparked user anger and congressional hearings in the United States. The episode highlighted the liquidity and clearing constraints facing a broker, even when its interface appears simple. Robinhood listed on Nasdaq in July 2021 under the ticker symbol HOOD. Its history has also been marked by penalties and settlements with authorities concerning, among other things, supervision and disclosures to customers.

A platform with multiple revenue streams

Brokerage remains at the heart of its business, but Robinhood is no longer limited to stock purchases. In the United States, its range includes fractional investing, retirement accounts and services related to uninvested cash. The Robinhood Gold subscription provides access to additional features and terms. Cryptocurrencies are another business focus, with services provided by separate entities within the group.

The advertised absence of fees on certain transactions does not mean the platform earns no compensation. Robinhood generates revenue notably from interest, subscriptions and compensation for routing orders to market intermediaries, known as “payment for order flow.” This mechanism, which is particularly important in American brokerage, is debated over potential conflicts of interest and execution quality. Results also depend on customer activity, interest rates and market movements, particularly in cryptoassets.

What next?

Robinhood is seeking to become a more comprehensive financial platform and reduce its reliance on transactions alone. Its expansion in the United Kingdom and the European Union reflects this ambition, with offerings adapted to local regulatory frameworks. The challenge will be to retain investors beyond periods of intense speculation while keeping expansion costs under control. Technical reliability, cybersecurity and customer protection will remain crucial. For this fintech company, broadening access to markets also means making the risks of sometimes complex products understandable, without letting the app’s simplicity obscure them.
